Air bubbles during phacoemulsification

This talk was presented at The Second Corneal Dystrophy Research Institute Symposium (14 June 2009) and to the residents and fellows of the Department of Ophthalmology (11 June 2009) at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. The presentation is a summary of three papers that investigated the mechanism of air bubble damage during phacoemulsification (Arch Ophthalmol 1997; 115:81-8), how to avoid producing air bubbles at the phacoemulsification tip (J Cataract Refract Surg 2002; 28:531-7), and the use of viscoelastic material to prevent injury to the endothelium by air bubbles (J Cataract Refract Surg 2002; 28:1047-53). The slides are available for download in Acrobat (.pdf) format.
