Virtual Meeting 19th AUGUST

posted 19/08/2020 21:30

Wednesday 19th August was our fifth meeting using Zoom

The meeting included:

  • a discussion of the Local Cemeteries Order 1977 including the restrictions on adding further inscriptions to a grave stone unless you were the original owner of the plot. Costs would be incurred and solicitors could be involved if you were not the original owner

  • use of Find a Grave and maintenance of war graves through Commonwealth War Graves

  • the use of spreadsheets to record the ships served on by a particular individual during WWII and how it could be adapted to record other forms of service

  • the successful identification of a particular family using parish records back to the seventeenth century

  • Note in September 1752, Great Britain switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. In order to achieve the change, 11 days were 'omitted' from the calendar - i.e. the day after 2 September 1752 was 14 September 1752.

  • Live advice sessions from findmypast are available live each Wednesday and Friday. Earlier ones being available on demand

One member asked if anyone was using Family Tree Maker as she was trying to produce a tree based on specific relationships. SEE BELOW

As a default it assumes you want the descendants of the person selected, so to show the ancestors you need to determine how many generations back you wish to go. It does show the brothers and sisters as well as the direct line. You can include their children as well if you select include all individuals
