All SUSS students are required to re-write their admissions essays once every year to monitor our progress in writing. This is to see if our writing skills had improved after the first semester at university. The topic of the essay I wrote during the admissions interview was 'Twitter Trolling'. I had to explain and evaluate the author's arguments in the given article "How Twitter Could Beat the Trolls, And Why It Won’t". We were required to watch the following video below on 'Twitter Trolling' for the written essay prior to the admissions interview.
After the first semester in SUSS, I learnt how to improve my writing skills through CCO101 Thinking and Reasoning course. Thus, I could apply the different writing techniques learnt in CCO101 Thinking and Reasoning module to re-writing this admissions essay. When I first wrote my admissions essay during the interview last year, my thoughts were disorganised due to the time limit and my nervousness. However, this assignment allowed me to plan out what to write with a clear mind and apply the writing techniques I learnt during the first semester. Therefore, I believe that my re-written admissions essay improved from the first time I wrote the admissions essay during the interview.
In conclusion, the essay writing skills I learnt in CCO101 Thinking and Reasoning course is are important skills that I will use throughout my time in SUSS, and even in working life in the future. Re-writing the admissions essay has certainly allowed me to recall and apply those writing skills.
