Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is how a corporation takes responsibility of and evaluates its own social, economic and environmental impact. In current times, many companies have CSR as an organisational policy whereby they come up with initiatives to make a positive impact to society or the environment. These are usually implemented beyond the companies’ self-interest such as profit-making or regulatory compliance.
As shown in the pictures I took in Deloitte below, Deloitte has a few daily CSR initiatives. The first picture shows a daily notice posted by Deloitte management in the printing areas to remind all personnel to reduce waste. This can be done by re-using the given stationary items instead of new blank pieces of paper. Deloitte has also recycled its outdated stationary items with the old logo instead of disposing them so that all personnel can re-use them when working. The second and third pictures are part of Deloitte’s initiative to reduce, reuse and recycle as well, which is in line with the Singapore Environmental Council. They are posted by Deloitte management in the printing areas to remind all personnel that power and paper is finite and to only use what they need for sustainability of resources. Hence, I feel that these CSR initiatives are effective since these notices are constantly reminding all personnel of reducing wastage and using only what is needed. However, some people may overlook these reminders amidst their busy work. Perhaps Deloitte can send out email reminders about reducing, reusing and recycling and place recycling bins in the whole office.

Deloitte also often provide various volunteer opportunities to personnel via email. This is in line with its main objective of making an impact that matters by giving back to society. Volunteer opportunities include donating blood, interacting with elderly residents, volunteering at a soup kitchen or an animal shelter, and helping children from low-income families based on one’s own interest. Some are weekly commitment while others are one-time activities which Deloitte staff can choose to participate. These are often updated via email to encourage Deloitte personnel to contribute and give back to society in their free time.
In conclusion, my experience in Deloitte allowed me to understand social responsibility and how we can contribute back to society better. I personally feel that social responsibility and CSR is very crucial since it is only ethical to make a positive impact on society by helping to save the environment or helping others in need.
