5 Weeks at Robinsons

After Semester 1 in Singapore University of Social Sciences, I got a temporary part-time job during the term break. I worked at the Finance & Accounting Department of Robinsons for five weeks from 18th November to 24th December 2015. Robinsons & Co. (S) Pte Ltd is a leading retail company offering quality merchandise from around the world to Singapore shoppers.

I worked as the Temporary Cash Office Assistant and was in charge of the Robinsons sale at Expo, Coast at Paragon and Oasis at Wisma Atria. I had to ensure that the total sale, each type of payment mode, Robinsons vouchers and Promotion vouchers from different suppliers and coporations for each point of sale (POS) in the Daily Cash Reconciliation Report tally with the physical Batch Settlement, Payment Media, Robinsons vouchers and Promotion vouchers of each POS. Different types of payment modes include MasterCard, Diners Card, Amex Card, Visa Card, Robinson Visa, Nets, Robinson Card and JCB Card. I also had to record and report any till discrepancies and solve previous till discrepancies with End User's Reports sent to the Cash Office. At the end of every week, I also had to check whether the total Robinsons Gift Card is balanced using the Monthly Cash Reconciliation Report.

Working at Robinsons was an eye-opening experience for me. I got to work with accountants and auditors at Robinsons and see what it is like as an accountant or auditor in the real world. This is especially relevant to me as I will be in the same line of work after graduating with the Bachelor of Accountancy. Furthermore, I also made use of my Excel Skills from BUS100 Business Skills and Management as previously mentioned as I had to work with Excel in tallying the Robinsons vouchers, Promotion vouchers and Robinsons Gift Card from Nera Transactions with the Gift Card Sales Report.

In conclusion, working at Robinsons as the Cash Office Assistant allowed me to experience what it is like in the real working world and to make full use of what I learnt in university and apply it in the business world.
