CCO105 Social Research teaches me the skills of how to observe and analyse social behaviours in a scientific manner using social research methods. In CCO105 Social Research module, there is the End-of-Course Assessment (ECA) which is an individual project which replaces the final written examination for this particular module. There are 3 components of the ECA - a 3000-word Research Report, a one-page Public Narrative and a 4-6min Video Presentation.
Research Report
This is my individual written research report. It contains my variables, indicators, data collection methods, findings of my research and my analysis and interpretation of those findings.
Public Narrative
Here is the one-page Public Narrative. It was written with the public in mind and contains what the general public would like to know about my research. It is an executive summary of my entire research for the eyes of the layperson.
Video Presentation
This is my video presentation of my entire research, meant for the eyes of the layperson.
Reflection
This module CCO105 Social Research is one of the most difficult modules I faced during Semester 1 in university. This is because the ECA had to be constantly improved and updated daily, especially during the study period for final examinations of the other modules that I took. However, I managed to complete the ECA and study for the remaining modules with better time management.
At the beginning of the ECA, I was unsure whether I should change my entire research question from my previous Tutor-Marked Assignment for this module because it was hard to find good literature review for my previous research question. However, after much thought, I decided not to change my research question and instead, I only tweaked my research question slightly. My current research question was more specific and focused compared to the previous one, and I was able to find good literature review with perseverance and effort.
My experience with Project Work (PW) in Yishun Junior College paid off as I was able to apply the skills learnt to the ECA Research Report. This included the skills of conducting a survey, how to do literature review, how to write a good report and how to do bibliography. However, the ECA was more complicated and also had other components which I was not familiar with. With the guide of my friends and determination, I managed to write a fairly good public narrative and a video presentation using MovieMaker as displayed above. My knowledge from the face-to-face sessions with our lecturer, Dr. Neo, also helped me in doing the ECA.
In conclusion, although it was a tedious process, the benefits of this module CCO105 Social Research outweigh the cons. The social research skills and report writing skills learnt from this module are very relevant and can be applied in both other modules as well as the working world. I definitely experienced what it is like being a fellow social researcher as conducting a social research was interesting and rewarding as I explored Singaporeans' attitudes towards People's Republic of China (PRC) immigrants.
