As part of our Group-Based Assignment (GBA) for this particular course CCO103 Critical Readings, we were required to create a 4-6min group video presentation and an individually written 350-word summary. For the video group presentation, we were required to craft satirical arguments which support why all forms of marriages should be banned throughout the world. We had to explain our presentation in the individual summary.
Video
This is my group’s satirical video on why all marriages should be banned. Please enjoy the video!
As shown below, this is my individual summary that I submitted along with the group video presentation.
Summary
Firstly, all marriages should not be banned because the procedures to getting married are simple. Our first argument in the video is that all marriages must be banned due to its complex procedures to getting married. Our first skit illustrates a sarcastic tone used to mock the 2-step guide to getting married in Singapore of being a complicated and tedious process. This is because in reality, the 2-step procedures to getting married are simple. Therefore, the benefits of banning all marriages are non-existent since the procedures are not complex. Thus, there is no reason to ban marriages as the procedures of getting married are simple.
Moreover, all marriages should not be banned because shared assets ensure financial security. In the satirical video, our second argument which supports why all marriages must be banned is that shared assets would result in safety issues. Our second skit illustrates how sharing assets gives people ridiculously exaggerated problems, such as being so rich that they are robbed every day. The skit is exaggerated so that our audience would feel that the reason to ban all marriages is ridiculous and hence, they would understand the underlying reason why all marriages should not be banned. In reality, shared assets in marriages are beneficial to both parties as they provide financial security instead of creating more problems.
Lastly, all marriages should not be banned because they rationalize why people should remain faithful to their partner with legal restrictions in place. Our last argument to support the banning of marriages is that everyone can remain faithful to their multiple partners. This is due to having no legal rules to restrict one from having multiple partners, hence resulting in the eradication of cheating. However, having no legal restrictions would encourage cheating instead as there are no legal consequences to being unfaithful in reality. In today’s modern society, having more than one partner is considered cheating and being unfaithful to your significant other to majority because polygamy is uncommon and is a taboo in most countries. Thus, all marriages facilitate both parties to remain committed and faithful to each other.
Reflection
As an individual who supports marriages, this assignment challenged my moral values on marriages. To me, marriage was based on love, trust and commitment between two individuals. I never thought of why and how the world would be better off without marriages as marriages are natural occurrences in society to me. However, I had to put aside my own ethical considerations and beliefs to be able to craft the arguments supporting why all marriages should be banned and present these arguments throughout the video. I gained more knowledge and widened my perspectives on marriages through this assignment.
