Case study based learning has many advantages but most importantly it encourages critical thinking, the ability to view and evaluate multiple perspectives, make connections across multiple content areas, strengthen communication skills and encourage collaborative learning. Well moderated case discussions often allow quieter and introverted learners to express themselves and voice opinions.
In an indirect way I have noticed that it develops in the student skills of reading and comprehension and often leads to extended reading and learning which conventional methods of teaching may not be successful in achieving. Case based learning has demonstrated in my discipline deeper understanding of concepts, retention and recall of learning. Students also demonstrate better application of knowledge and are more active in the learning process. I have also noticed better peer-to-peer relationship and sharing of information and ideas among the cohort as they find the format challenging and invigorating.
As the videos used by me for my classroom interactions are very heavy files, I am appending the URL for anyone who is interested in viewing the same. (this video is a Harvard Business School video and the interesting bit to note is their faculty's observations about teaching and learning and how they prepare for class engagement!)
