Reflections: Skilled Teacher – Nandita Abraham
Nandita is a good teacher.
Her subject competency is phenomenal and her easy confidence in class comes from her deep understanding and knowledge of what she teaches. After observing Nandita, I now realize that to be able to teach competently one has to:
Ø Be organized: lesson plans must be prepared no matter how many years you’ve been teaching the same topic. Each cohort is unique and has different learning needs.
Ø Be in control without being overbearing: managing the class well is a part of the students’ learning experience and creates the environment for learning
Ø Engage the students in the learning process: through discussions, activities questions and debates.
Ø Reach out and listen: by identifying the less participative members and letting them being heard.
Ø Know when to move away from a topic under discussion if it becomes too confusing
Ø Be patient: different students have different needs and levels of engagement
Ø Be humorous: gives a welcome respite when the going gets a bit heavy
Ø Be a good communicator: use lucid and simple language for clarity and understanding
