The Playhouse was one of several buildings constructed with the intention of post-fair use. During the fair, it served as a performing arts venue. The open courtyard outside the entrance featured the Fountain of the Northwest.

After the fair, the building became the new home of the Seattle Repertory Theatre. In 1982, they moved into the brand-new Bagley Wright Theatre next door. In 1987, the Playhouse reopened as Intiman Theatre, which still puts on a number of shows every year. The fountain still remains in the courtyard.
