6. My notes and questions:
1. Cognitivism is the understanding of how the mind processes information which is synonymous to a computer.
2. Cognitive Constructivism (personal meaning making) emphasizes that individuals learn by making sense of the world around them through individual constructs and linking them to prior knowledge. Individual constructs their own knowledge through experience and reflection. Social Constructivism (meaning making in the presence of others) - learning from peers.
3. Connectivism is based on the premise that knowledge exist in the world rather than in the minds of individuals; knowledge is accessible to people through contact (connections with people). With new media, the connection with people is greatly enhanced.
4. Cognitivism and constructivism are connected such that our mind first has to process the information that we receive from our environment and we have to make sense out of the information that we receive and either assimilate or accommodate it into our prior knowledge. Connectivism comes into play when new information is received from contact with other people.
5. Cognitivism is where information is stored, constructivism is how individuals construct their own knowledge, and connectivism is how an individual connects with people to acquire information.
6. The difference between the 3 theories is that in cognitivism and constructivism, the premise is that humans make sense of their own knowledge, and that knowledge is stored in the brain of the individual. However, in connectivism, the knowledge exists in the world rather than the minds of the individual.
7. The similarity between the 3 theories is that it all emphasizes how humans acquire knowledge.
