If your child gets involved in an incident related to the use of the Internet and new technologies, the following recommendations may help to provide a better response and support. Although each incident, given its nature and characteristics, should be dealt with in a particular way, these general guidelines will serve as a guide.
School cyberbullying, grooming and sensitive content leaks.
In the event of an incident of cyberbullying, grooming or is exposed to the leaking of personal images (the most common case are the images of sexual content, which is known as sexting):
- Listen and talk. Ask your child what is happening, listen carefully and help him to express emotions and concerns (use phrases like "tell me more about that"). To facilitate the dialog show serene and adopt an attitude of understanding and attention, this is not the time to judge him. If you find dialogue reluctance, keep in mind that adolescents have their own social dynamics that usually does not include their parents. In that case, suggest talking with friends or other trusted adults to help you manage the situation.

- Act, make a plan . Act immediately, do not wait until the incident stops by itself because the problem could get worse. Agree to an effective response to the situation and with the cooperation of your son to carry it out. Make sure that the child understands what are the next steps to take. The goal is to be strengthened and feel part of the solution.
- Communicate about the situation at the school . In case the incident is linked with the school, it is very important to be aware of the situation. The school is the main place of relationship and can help to give a better solution to the problem. Many of the educational centers have action protocols in their plans to manage these situations (e.g. school cyberbullying). When you talk to the school about the situation of your child, try not to over-react, keep in mind that the most important thing is to work together to solve the situation, let them clear that you want to help and that you trust on the school the same way that you expect them to trust you.
- Report of what happened to your kid's pediatrician . In the event that the incident has affected the health of the child this must be valued by his doctor to treat the symptoms he has, to prevent the situation from getting worse and to help him and you in the steps to follow.
- Advise him on how to act in future situations. The aim is to prevent the problem is occur again in the future. Give him recommendations to minimize the chances of it happening again. Help them to learn from their mistakes without blaming, letting them know that we all make mistakes and what learning from mistakes is.

Virus infection, or being the victim of fraud
If it is a problem related to the infection of your devices by a virus, or being the victim of a fraud or identity theft, the Security Office of the Internaut (OSI) puts at your disposal different channels of support to help you resolve your doubts and security problems:
Si tu hijo se ve involucrado en un incidente relacionado con el uso de Internet y las nuevas tecnologías, las siguientes recomendaciones pueden ayudarte a prestarle una mejor respuesta y soporte. Aunque cada incidente, dada su naturaleza y características propias, debe abordarse de forma particular, estas pautas generales te servirán a modo de orientación.
Ciberacoso escolar, ciberacoso sexual y filtración de contenido sensible
En caso de tratarse de un incidente de ciberacoso escolar (ciberbullying ), ciberacoso sexual (grooming ), o se ve expuesto a la filtración de imágenes personales comprometidas (el caso más habitual son las imágenes de contenido sexual, lo que se conoce como sexting):
- Escucha y dialoga. Pregunta a tu hijo lo que está sucediendo, escúchale atentamente y ayúdale a expresar emociones y preocupaciones (use frases como “Cuéntame más sobre eso”). Para facilitar el diálogo muéstrate sereno y adopta una actitud de comprensión y atención, no es el momento de juzgarle. Si encuentras reticencias al diálogo, ten en cuenta que los adolescentes tienen su propia dinámica social que generalmente no incluye a sus padres. En ese caso, promueve que hable con amigos u otros adultos de confianza para que le ayuden a gestionar la situación.
- Refuerza su autoestima y no le culpabilices . Asegúrate de que entiende la problemática asociada al incidente y hazle hincapié en que no está solo, que estás allí para ayudarle a resolver la situación con la dignidad y el respeto que toda persona se merece. Si bien él puede haber cometido errores en ningún caso justifican lo que le está sucediendo. Se positivo, reconoce su valentía por haber pedido ayuda y/o dejarse ayudar y hazle saber que se solucionará.
- Actúa, traza un plan . Actúa inmediatamente, no esperes a que el incidente cese por sí solo porque el problema podría agravarse. Acuerda una respuesta eficaz a la situación y cuenta con la cooperación de tu hijo para llevarla a cabo. Asegúrate de que el menor entiende cuáles son los siguientes pasos a realizar. El objetivo es que salga reforzado y se sienta parte de la solución.
- Comunica la situación al centro educativo . En caso de que el incidente esté vinculado con el centro educativo es muy importante que sean conocedores de la situación. La escuela es el principal lugar de relación del menor y pueden contribuir a dar una mejor solución al problema. Muchos de los centros educativos disponen de protocolos de actuación en sus planes de convivencia para gestionar estas situaciones (ej. ciberacoso escolar). Cuando hables con el centro educativo sobre la situación de tu hijo trata de no sobre-reaccionar, ten presente que lo más importante es trabajar conjuntamente para resolver la situación, déjales claro que estás para ayudar y que confías en el centro educativo de la misma manera en que esperas que ellos confíen en ti.
- Informa de lo ocurrido al pediatra . En caso de que el incidente haya afectado a la salud del menor este debe ser valorado por su pediatra para tratar los síntomas que tiene, para prevenir que la situación empeore y para ayudarle en los pasos a seguir.
- Aconséjale sobre cómo actuar ante futuras situaciones. Se trata de evitar que el problema se reproduzca en el futuro. Trasládale las recomendaciones oportunas para minimizar las probabilidades de que vuelva a ocurrir. Ayúdale a aprender de sus errores sin culpabilizarle, haciéndole saber que todos nos equivocamos y que lo valiente es aprender de los errores.
