Teaching

THOUGHTS

As I think back upon my life, it seems like I was always teaching someone. From my youth, when I was teaching my cousins, to friends teaching new games or sports, to now, I have always been interested in sharing my knowledge of what I know.

When I was home with our young children, I began substitute teaching - some might say this is the toughest job in the world, as everyone recalls being mean to substitutes in school, or recalls how incompetent they were. To other's surprise, but not mine, I was requested to substitute by teachers because they knew I was a reliable, knowlegable instructor - who would get the job done. At one school, I began asking silly riddles and if a student answered the question correctly, I would give them candy. At my current job at Century College, I continually run into former students who ask me if I have any candy for them.

I also began teaching skiing at a local ski resort, then learned how to snowboard (before it was even cool), and after one year, began teaching snowboarding exclusively. Eventually, I became a Certified Snowboard Instructor (PSIA). I still wear this pin with pride.

I also was the coach for Destination Imagination Teams at the Mahtomedi School District for many years. I worked closely with children in an international brain-power competition. I also coached soccer for many years - many of my athletes are still competing in high school.

I ran into many inspirational teachers while substitute teaching, and went back to school and obtained my teaching certificate in social studies, grades 5-12. After obtaining my certificate, I taught 7th grade social studies at St. Anthony Middle School, and also high school at the City, Inc..

I went back to substitute teaching, one year, I substitute taught all but four days. I could regail you with substitue stories if you wish.

Currently, I am teaching students, faculty, staff at Century College how to use eFolio, a wonderful online product that could be used for storage, getting jobs and in classrooms. I also teach other staff and faculty from other MNSCU colleges how to use this product. Many of the short lessons I prepared for students are on the Internet.

I teach with humor, and knowledge and passion. I like people.I like to share my knowledge and love of learning.
