On November 30, 2011 the RCC sent its submission to the Ontario Coroner for consideration in his investigation into cycling fatalities.
Summary of recommendations,
• Create a strong messaging component for all road users, to modify their behavior
and attitudes while on the road.
• Develop shared road use education components in the provincial driver’s
handbook, testing and education programs.
• Implement shared road use education in bicycle skills training programs delivered
widespread and in a variety of forms to all ages of people.
• Target enforcement of the law in situations that most compromise cycling safety.
This means ticketing both motor vehicle operators, and cyclists acting
irresponsibly.
• Engineer roadway rehabilitation to enhance shared road use, and implement
infrastructure changes where evidence is clear that a benefit will be realized.
• Use innovative approaches to mold a more co-operative, considerate, integrated
and respectful roadway environment for the province of the future.
