An analysis of five years of crash data received from the City shows there is no cyclist safety problem on Laurier Avenue. In the summer, the City says that 1,000 cyclist trips are made daily on Laurier. Over a five year period (2005 to 2009 inclusive) only eight crashes would have been affected by the separation of cyclists from motor vehicle traffic, and five of those involved cyclists running into stationery vehicles. Eighteen crashes occurred at intersections or involved turning manoeuvres. The recent fatal crash of a skateboarder in Montreal shows that risk to users increases with the presence of a segregated bike lane at intersections. The risk will be particularly elevated for new or inexperienced cyclists.
