Key points
All articles, videos and PIPs that focus on children should include a ‘suitable for’ age range, with an upper and lower age.
You can assign age ranges from 0 to 18 years.
Supply age ranges for content about children and teenagers but not for content for grown-ups.
When supplying age ranges, consider what users are most likely to understand, and remember that non-divisible age ranges are particularly hard to understand.
If one or both of the minimum or maximum ages is not divisible by 12, the CMS will automatically display the range in years. For ages over 18 months, this can be difficult to read and understand. For these situations, we can use the Age - Suitability display override field on the CMS metadata screen, rather than the minimum and maximum age boxes.
For example, see Separation anxiety in babies and children:
Instead of writing: 8 and 96 in the minimum and maximum boxes and getting a display of 0.7-8 years
You can write: 8 months-8 years in the Suitability display override field.
Stick with the core age the content focuses on. For example, even if an article about preschoolers mentions something they might have done when they were toddlers, it doesn’t mean the article is about toddlers. In this case it would be best to keep the age range focused on preschoolers (aged 3-5).
Ensure the age range reflects the age-stage categories the article has been assigned to.
You can use the plus symbol (+) to indicate the content might be relevant beyond the upper age.
