Lady Tweedsmuir Competitions

In 1945, Susan Buchan, Lady Tweedsmuir (wife of John Buchan, The Right Honourable Lord Tweedsmuir and 15th Governor General of Canada) donated three silver cups to the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada to be awarded for home craft competitions each Triennium.

The Lady Tweedsmuir cups are awarded in three categories:

  • handicrafts

  • culture

  • history and heritage

There is also a competition for community, and the winning submission will become the back cover of the booklet.

Senator Cairine Wilson Competition

On February 15, 1930 Cairine Wilson was appointed as the first woman Senator. She served in the Senate until her death in 1962, gaining recognition for her dedication to causes such as supporting refugees and the League of Nations.

She became the first female president of the League of Nations Society in Canada. In 1949 Senator Wilson became the first Canadian woman to be a delegate to the UN General Assembly. She was the first woman Deputy Speaker at the Canadian Senate in 1955.
