The secret passage is dark, twisting, low-ceilinged, and very long. It seems to pass under much of the city, as overhead you hear church bells, factory equipment, horses' hooves, trolleys, and people discussing "in" decorations.
Finally, after one last turn, the passage dead-ends in a tiny room. Above you, the room stretches upwards in a tall column. You appear to be at the bottom of an elevator shaft. The room contains a large, empty cage. One of the bars of the cage is loose. On the floor in front of the cage is a scrap of notebook paper with the letter "N" scrawled on it.
