1. Read Between the Lines

An interactive guessing game posted on lemonysnicket.com shortly after the release of The Slippery Slope. Readers could combine specific words from The Slippery Slope to reveal a clue about The Grim Grotto (although it actually ended up being a clue about The Penultimate Peril).

2. The Nameless Novel

A secondary website (thenamelessnovel.com, now defunct) launched during the months leading up to the release of The Penultimate Peril. Each day fans could complete a task, such as decoding a message, in order to receive a reward, such as a piece of an illustration from the upcoming book.

Highlights from The Nameless Novel:

Dear Reader (crossover secret message on the home page of lemonysnicket.com)

The worst came after their cover was revealed.

Highlights from The Nameless Novel:

Ants in the Fruit Salad (excerpt from a Gustav Sebald screenplay)

The counterfeit concierge is in.

3. Vile Videos

Three videos posted on lemonysnicket.com and YouTube during the weeks leading up to the release of The End. A secret message was hidden in each video; when combined, the messages spelled "Two Called Beatrice".

    • 12 Books in 120 Seconds: "The first in a series of three panic-stricken videos leading up to THE END. Narrated by the infamous Tim Curry and with music by the Gothic Archies, it threatens to expose you to everything the Baudelaire orphans have suffered so far, in less time than it takes to brush one's teeth." Watch on YouTube

    • The Snicket Emergency: "Prepared by the London Branch of the Herpetological Society, The Snicket Emergency presents a grim commentary on the worldwide suffering caused by A Series of Unfortunate Events." Watch on Youtube

    • Scream and Run Away: "Contains extensive rare footage of Mr. Snicket himself. Many are already calling it the most disturbing video of all." Watch on YouTube

4. A Series of Unfortunate Trading Cards

Printable trading cards of the main characters. The "Beatrice" trading card was notable for containing the only published photograph of Beatrice (with the possible exception of the photograph of "B" in Chapter Six of The Unauthorized Autobiography).

12. Now in Paperback

In 2007, the first three books were released in special paperback editions. These new editions were designed to mimic Victorian "penny dreadful" novels. They contained new illustrations and cover art by Brett Helquist, as well as an appendix created for each book titled "The Cornucopian Cavalcade". The Cornucopian Cavalcade contained a humorous Lemony Snicket advice column, obscure vintage advertisements, a serialized graphic novel titled "The S'Poily Brats" by Michael Kupperman, and mildly amusing activities such as paper-folding. To promote the new editions, HarperCollins created a new sub-section of lemonysnicket.com, called "Now in Paperback".

The website included a book trailer, samplers for The Cornucopian Cavalcade and The S'Poily Brats , and an entry form for readers to submit questions to Mr. Snicket's advice column.

Mr. Snicket rarely succeeded in attending these events, and Mr. Handler generally made his apologies and signed his books in his absence.
