How do I store Truvada and how long will it last?

Summary

Generally speaking, store Truvada in a clean, dry location at room temperature. Avoid extreme heat and cold, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Do not store Truvada in a refrigerator or freezer. Keep the tablets in the original container until you are ready to take them or to lay them out in a 7- or 14-day pillbox or similar. For more details, read on.

Details

Truvada is a "controlled room temperature" product, which means there is data to show the drug remains stable when stored over time at temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F-86°F). The table below provides additional stability data from Gilead related to particular storage conditions (temperature and humidity). This data applies to Gilead brand name Truvada only, but it may also be generally applicable generic formulations of Truvada. As you'll see, even at 40°C/104°F, the tablets in the original bottle are good for 6 months (provided they don't expire first). In the refrigerator (which is too humid and too cold), a bottle will last only a couple months.

Note

The tablets do not instantly lose all of their potency at the end of the Acceptable Duration period listed in the table. The duration shown is simply the longest period of time for which there is scientific evidence that drug remains at full strength.
