Does PrEP cause liver problems?
No, PrEP does not generally cause liver problems.
- In the iPrEX study that first showed Truvada is effective as PrEP, researchers reported no association was found with changes in liver function.
- In a review of 18 studies involving almost 12,000 PrEP users, none had any clinically significant change in liver function.
- Because Truvada, taken as PrEP, is generally safe for the liver, the United States CDC does not recommend liver function tests for monitoring people on PrEP in (see the CDC Clinical Practice Guideline and the accompanying Provider's Supplement).
IMPORTANT! One of the best things you can do to protect your liver is to get vaccinated against hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
