Do I have to take PrEP medication at the same time every day?

If you are taking the PrEP medication every day, it does not really matter what time you take it. Healthcare providers often recommend taking the medication at the same time each day because that helps some people establish a habit and makes it less likely that they will forget a dose. However, if you are taking daily PrEP, the important thing is to take the medication every day. PrEP is no less effective if you take it in the morning some days, and in the afternoon or evening on other days.

If you are taking PrEP 2-1-1 (on-demand PrEP), the dosing schedule is much more important. Be sure to take each dose at, or within a couple of hours of, the prescribed time. With on-demand PrEP, late doses can reduce your level of protection from HIV.
