Most people who have good kidney function before starting PrEP maintain good kidney function over time while on PrEP.
About 1 in 200 people (0.5%), however, experience a potentially significant change in kidney function while on PrEP. If two consecutive laboratory tests confirm the change, some people are taken off the medication for a short while to give their kidneys a break. Of those taken off the medicine, 98% are able to resume PrEP with no further issues with kidney function.
