MFD Troubleshooting

My MFD seems to be completely dead or has moisture inside. Should I leave it connected?

Dead MFD can cause strange engine running problems. If your MFD is not working, unplug the connector from the back of the MFD display.

Tip: First check that the 'dead MFD' problem is not just a failed 1/4 Amp fuse inside the electrical box

Don't just check it with a voltmeter. Remove the fuse and confirm zero ohms from end to end on the fuse itself.

Where is the fuse for the MFD?

Inside the electrical box is a 1/4 Amp fuse for the MFD.

Only replace it with another 1/4 Amp fuse, not a higher Amp rated fuse.

1/4 Amp MFD fuse is Radio Shack Catalog #: 270-1002 (Note: Radio Shack may have discontinued carrying this fuse) MFD fuse is AGC/3AG type 1/4 Amp, such as Radio Shack Catalog #: 270-1002 0.25A 250V Fast-Acting x ¼" Glass Fuse (4-Pack)

Note: If you have a bilge pump, there will be a separate 3 Amp AGW type fuse for that

I just connected the battery and the MFD display is acting weird, or seems to be 'locked up'.

MFD Engine Hour counter reset-to-zero hours method

Updated info on accurate MFD voltage calibration, requires 14.00 volt battery voltage during calibration

How to reset the MFD (older posts)       (original Ph2ocraft version)

aka CAL (calibrate) mode

Corrects for incorrect voltage readings and incorrect LOPr (Low Power) message only if battery voltage is close to 14.0 volts during calibration

Note: 14.x volts is the voltage of a properly charging battery when the engine is running, measured at the battery posts with a digital multi-meter.

Display is stuck on one function, display shows all 8's or buttons don't work  (Ph2ocraft Al)

This malfunction can occur when the battery has been disconnected or removed.

It may freeze on any function, or with all 8's the MFD is running its self check during power up.

This will usually happen when there is a power glitch and the micro-processor temporarily malfunctions.

It will usually correct itself when you disconnect the battery for a few minutes, it usually takes 2-3 (or more) minutes to re-set the micro-processor.

When connecting the battery negative cable, make sure it is a "clean connection. Meaning only let the terminal contact the battery once. DON'T repeatedly contact the battery!! Hold pressure on the cable until the bolt is tight.

If you have problems connecting the battery terminals you can disconnect the MFD connector, install the battery cables and then plug the MFD back in (my recommendation)

MFD display/warning messages HOT = Temp sensor indicates the engine is overheatingDo not continue to ride until the reason for the engine overheat is corrected.

Note: The MFD goes into sleep mode after five minutes of no activity. Clock will still be visible. Press the Mode button for one second or Start engine to 'wake up' the display.

Differences between the various MFD versions

Quick-Trim position indicator

Note: No trim or trim indicator on SLT 3 seat models

The Fast trim motors on the Pro models and 1999-2001 SLX move the trim nozzle at twice the rate of the 'standard' trim motors.

The MFD trim position display on these machines also tracks at twice the normal rate, when the trim buttons are pressed.

If you mis-match the trim motor speed and MFD, the MFD trim position display will not match the actual trim position..

3280252 is a slow trim, max tachometer 7,000RPM, standard fuel sender

MFI TroubleshootingIs it normal for the clock to always be visible? YesThe MFI should go to sleep after five minutes of no activity, but the clock will still be active. How do I check that it really is sleeping? What does a working MFI display look like when it 'wakes up' from sleep mode?My MFI hour meter reading is incorrect or very highSometimes the MFI engine hour counter will suddenly jump to a very high number, such as 553.3 hours (or 533?). This can happen if the battery has been left connected while the battery voltage has slowly fades away during storage and at some point the MFI internally becomes unhappy and does strange things. Until recently there was no way to reset the MFI hour counter back to the previous count, or to zero. You will read on here about MFD units that reset to zero hours, but the MFI and MFD are different things.

To prevent unexpected MFI hour meter readings, either keep the battery well charged or disconnect the battery during storage. This is yet another reason to favor AGM type batteries in your watercraft.

Tip: When re-connecting the battery cable make sure you do so as a quick smooth motion with solid contact, without repeatedly jiggling the cable end against the battery post. If you are worried about the display or will be doing a lot of battery re-connecting, you can unplug the display connector behind the display until you are finished.

I don't know or have forgotten the security code for my MFI display.

The other NGI display version is found on the MSX 110 and MSX 150 turbocharged models. There is no oil level display, but there is a pseudo 'Turbo boost' indicator. Both NGI versions are controlled by a single Reset button on the display, and a Mode button on the left handlebar.
