Saigon Heat sets high target for first tourney
HCM CITY — Vietnam’s first-ever professional basketball team is aiming high when it will compete for the first time in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) competition in January.
SaiGon Heat has been training at Lanh Binh Thang Gymnasium (District 11) for four weeks under experienced British coach Robert Newson. They have set themselves an ambitious goal at the ABL.
“We are not going to the ABL to lose. We do not know what will happen,” he added.“We sense we can compete because we have top players on the team, and the Vietnamese players are getting better and better every day.” “Preparations are going OK. Everybody is working hard and we have a long way to go, and not very much time. But we will try our best and see where we are in a few weeks’ time,” Newson said.
The British coach said the team would also welcome two American professional basketball players Jonathan Jones and Julius Melvin Hodge (former NBA Denver Nuggets 1st round draft choice) this weekend.
Jones is 32 years old and 2.11m in height and has played for professional basketball leagues in Hungary and South Korea, while Hodge is 28 years old and 2.01m and has played in the American NBA. “Jones plays centre and has been doing very well in Europe, while Hodges has played in the NBA and some very high leagues in Europe,” Newson said.
Besides Jones and Hodge, the team also includes John Smith of the Philippines and Cambodian-American Sopheoun Oeun, and seven local players from Soc Trang, Joton, Binh Thuan and Air Force teams. “The size and fitness are very big factors affecting the performance of the team. But Vietnamese players are in good shape and well-conditioned. The problem is their size and basketball ability,” he said.
The ABL, to be played from January through June 2012, will see eight teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. Each of the teams is allowed to have two international players and three regional players. SaiGon Heat will play a total of 21 games (10 home and 11 away). SaiGon Heat was launched in October by SaiGon Sports Academy, a training academy for multiple sports, with the aim of unlocking basketball potential in Vietnam. — VNS (http://vietnamnews.vnagency.com.vn/Sports/218517/saigon-heat-sets-high-target-for-first-tourney.html)

nblindonesia.com - 18/05/2011Christopher E. Commons, New Player for CLS Knights from the United States of America
At the ASEAN competition Basketball League (ABL) last season, Christopher E. Commons set a historical ABL record. He holds the record as the highest scorer in one game. Together with the CLS Knights playing in the international tournament, LA Lights World Challenge 2011, he was ready to explode. (Ainur ROHMAN, Surabaya)Christopher E. Commons immediately stepped on the gas in its inaugural match in international tournament LA Lights World Challenge 2011. Against team from China Sunlot Dui Tian Guang, he appeared fierce and became top scorer for his team to score 34 points.
For Commons, the start was very good. It became a valuable capital for face Melaka Selection today (18 / 5). In such action, the player with 204 cm height was very dominant. Especially the action under the ring.
''I just try to do my best,''said the Commons. Playing for CLS is a challenge for him. Mainly to better understand the culture of basketball in Indonesia.
Understandably, in the 2010-2011 season, the player from the United States (U.S.) learned about the basketball culture of Southeast Asia while playing for the Brunei Barracudas in the ASEAN Champions Basketball League (ABL).
Last season was quite disappointing for the Commons. Brunei coached by ''Bong' Geraldo Ramos did not make the play-offs despite of the fact of strong performances by Commons.
In fact, the Commons made history in the arena of ABL as the highest scorer in one game with 38 points while beating Satria Muda Britama of Jakarta. Overall, he is scoring the most voracious machine number two in the ABL with an average of 22 points per game.
Getting the Commons is a distinct advantage for CLS. In addition to solid performances together with Brunei, he started for BSW Wulfen, a German basketball team in 2010. While scoring 21.1 points per game, the alumnus of USC Aiken, South Carolina, brought Wulfen the WBV Champions Cup.
''I hope to continue to play well,''said the Commons. Together with CLS, he is determined to give the best results. After playing and practicing together under Risdianto Roeslan's coaching, he said that the CLS has great potential. ''The team is filled with many talented young players who are great. Team work is also going well. I am sure I can grow here'' he added.
Commons said, playing in the tournament is a valuable experience. Indonesia is the fourth foreign country which he visited. Besides Germany and Brunei, he also played for Al Ittihad of Bahrain. As a starter, he also became the leading scorer for his team with an average of 34 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.
''Every country has a different culture. That's what makes me excited. In the tradition of basketball, Indonesia is certainly not the same as any other country I have ever visited." said Commons.
