Former Australian Mathematics Olympians

The following is my best record of IMO students, their performances and where they are now. It closely replicates records on the AMT web site (which I personally maintained until the end of 2012) for the years 1981 to 2012, although in some cases it has further information to which I had access after my retirement at the end of 2012 and which may not be there.

  • 1981 Washington (23rd of 27)

    • Alan Blair, Sydney Grammar School, NSW, Year 9

    • After obtaining BSc and BA (hons) at Sydney University, Alan studied mathematics at MIT, completing his PhD in 1994. Until 1997 he was a post-doctoral fellow in cognitive science at Brandeis University. He was awarded a Fullbright Award in 1989. In 2002 he was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Melbourne, but in 2006 is in the Computer Science and Engineering Department of the University of New South Wales.

    • Jim Farmer, Waratah High School, NSW, Year 12

    • Jim is an actuary. He was at MLC Life and later a Lecturer in the Department of Actuarial Studies at Macquarie University.

    • Geoffrey Heenan, St Joseph's College, NSW, Year 12

    • In 1996 studying for PhD in Economics at Columbia University, New York. In 2000 was teaching Economics at Columbia University. In 2003 working for the International Monetary Fund.

    • Wing On Lam, Strathfield South High School, NSW, Year 12

    • Stephen McKay, Dalby State High School, Qld, Year 12

    • Ken Ross, Mount Scopus Memorial College, Vic, Year 11

    • Ken studied Computer Science at Stanford University. In 2013 is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at Columbia University. He got a national young investigator award from the National Science Foundation in 1994.

    • Ken Skinner, Boonah State High School, Qld, Year 12

    • Ken has a BSc with first class honours in Physics from the University of Queensland (1986) and a PhD in the field of Hypersonic Aerodynamics from the University of Queensland (1994). Currently (2007) he works for the Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Enoggera, Queensland as a Senior Research Scientist developing Command and Control Support Systems.

    • Richard Wilson, The King's School, NSW, Year 12, Bronze

    • PhD, Mathematics, University of Newcastle, 1989, on modelling and planning of health care systems. Then a Post-doctoral Teaching Fellow at University College, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra. Later lived in Trent, Italy, working for the European Christian Mission at the Evangelical Church of Trent, and for the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students at the University of Trent.

    • David Chalmers (also Wikipedia reference), Unley High School, SA, Year 12, Bronze

    • David obtained a BSc (Hons) in mathematics at the University of Adelaide in 1986. He received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University (1987 to 1988) but then turned his mind to philosophy. He received a PhD in philosophy and cognitive science at the University of Indiana in 1993. He then spent 2 years as a McDonnell Fellow at Washington University in St Louis. From August 1995 he was in the Department of Philosophy in the University of California, Santa Cruz. His book The conscious mind: in search of a fundamental theory was published by Oxford University Press in 1996. He also had an article in the December 1995 edition of Scientific American. He was Professor of Philosophy at the University of Arizona from 1999 to 2004, and that since 2004 he has been an ARC Federation Fellow, Professor of Philosophy, and Director of the Centre for Consciousness at the Australian National University.

    • Ken Ross, Mount Scopus Memorial College, Vic, Year 12

    • Dirk Vertigan, Elizabeth Matriculation College, Tas, Year 11

    • BSc (First Class Hons, Maths), U Tas, 1987. MSc U Tas 1987 (took 9 months). Took up a Commonwealth Scholarship to study for a DPhil at Oxford University supervised by Dr Dominic Welsh. In 1990 awarded Oxford University Senior Mathematics Prize for best dissertation by a mathematics DPhil student. DPhil, 1991. Postdoctoral fellow at DIMACS (NJ, USA) 1991-2. Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow at the Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics, Bonn, Germany, 1992-3. At Louisiana State University since 1993: Assistant Professor 1993-1998, Associate Professor 1998-2003, Full Professor 2003-present.

    • David Baldwin, Pulteney Grammar School, SA

    • David studied Maths and Computing at the ANU, obtaining BSc (Hons) in 1987. He is now Head of the Teaching and Learning Technology Support Unit at the ANU.

    • Andrew Kepert, Churchlands Senior High School, WA, Bronze

    • BSc (Hons, Maths), UWA, 1989. PhD (Maths) ANU, 1992. Andrew's PhD supervisors were Rick Loy and George Willis. From 1992 to 1995 he held postdoctoral and visiting positions at the University of Copenhagen, Oklahoma State University, University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of Alberta. He is now a Lecturer in Mathematics at the Central Coast Campus of the University of Newcastle, NSW and is doing research in Functional and Harmonic Analysis. He later became Head of Mathematics at the University of Newcastle. In 2007 he is joining the Problems Committee of the Australian Mathematics Competition. In 2013 he becomes moderator of the committees (including the primary versions).

    • Richard Moore, Prince Alfred College, SA, Bronze

    • BSc (Hons) in Maths and Computer Science at ANU, 1987. Worked in the finance industry in Sydney until 2000, firstly at Bankers Trust until 1996 and then at Salomon Smith Barney as a Director in their Equity Capital Markets group. He now lives in Brisbane, where he was from 2003 to 2010 the Chief Executive Officer of Dark Blue Sea, an internet company. Since 2010 he works for Esri Australia.

    • Stephen Tyler, Knox Grammar School, NSW

    • BSc (CompSci, Maths), Sydney, 1987 BE (Hons, Electrical), UTS, 1990 Master of Engineering Management, UTS 1995 with IEAust MEM Prize Worked in a variety of engineering roles before being a Marketing Manager and Research Manager at Canon. Left Canon in 2000 to found an internet consulting company, eBusiness Results, in Newcastle.

    • Jonathon Ennis, Melbourne C of E Grammar School, Vic

    • Now Jonathon Ennis-King. In 1985-1988 he completed a BSc (Hons) degree in mathematics, with minors in physics, chemistry and computing. In 1989-1993 he completed his PhD in the department of Applied Mathematics, Research School of Physical Sciences, ANU. In 1993-5 he had a postdoctoral position at the department of mathematics, University of Melbourne. In 1996-7 he had a postdoctoral position in Physical Chemistry 2, Lund University, Sweden. Since Feb 1998 he was a postdoc at the Research School of Chemistry at ANU, broadly working in chemical physics and statistical mechanics, but from an applied maths perspective. In 2006 he was with the CSIRO Division of Petroleum in Melbourne.

    • Matthew Hardman, Knox Grammar School, NSW, Bronze

    • BSc (Hons I) in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sydney. In 1996 finishing off a PhD in asset pricing models at University of Sydney. He is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney and has been a personal tutor for Olympian team members for six years.

    • Andrew Jenkins, North Sydney Boys High School, NSW

    • BSc (First Class Hons, Computer Science, University Medal), Sydney. Then studied for PhD, Computer Science at University of Sydney. Later worked for Bain & Co in Sydney, and in 2001 worked for Deutsche Bank in London. In 2006 he was working in London for the Royal Bank of Scotland, developing and testing pricing models for the Credit Derivatives trading desk.

    • John Kramer, Sydney Grammar School, NSW

    • BSc (Hons I) in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sydney, 1988. After 3 years designing and writing foreign exchange options software at Macquarie Bank, he moved to be the Software Design Lead at accounting software house Ceedata (which through mergers became Xlon, Solution6, and - after he left in 2001 - a division of MYOB). In 2001 he moved to the country, where he has three young children, has built his own house, and grows olives.

    • Michael Peake, Prince Alfred College, SA, Silver

    • Undertook postgraduate study at Oxford University. Later working in the IT industry in Adelaide for an organisation called dspace, and is active in training the local students. From 2016 to 2012 he was State Director of AMOC for South Australia.

    • Shane Booth, Wanganui Park High School, Shepparton, Vic, Bronze

    • Shane completed a BSc in Computer Science at the University of Melbourne in 1988.

    • John Graham, St Ignatius College, Riverview, NSW, Silver

    • John was Deputy Leader of Australia's IMO team in 1991, 1992 and 1993. After finishing his PhD at Sydney in 1996 under Gus Lehrer he held post docs at Aarhus, Denmark 96-97 and Imperial College, London 97-99 in Pure Mathematics. He is currently a Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Birmingham (England).

    • Alasdair Grant, Melbourne Grammar School, Vic, Bronze

    • Alasdair graduated MA (Hons I) from Cambridge in Mathematics and Computer Science. He is still in Cambridge, working for ARM, developing optimizing compilers. ARM is the company which designs processors for most of the big mobile phone manufacturers, including Nokia and Apple.

    • Andrew Hassell, Christ Church Grammar School, WA, Gold

    • BSc (First Class Hons, Maths, with University Medal) ANU. PhD at MIT. Went to Stanford but returned to ANU in 1996 as a Postdoctoral Fellow. In 2002 he became a Lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences at the ANU. From 2010 Andrew has been appointed an ARC Future Fellow, located still at the ANU and promoted to Professor. In 2013 Andrew was also elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. From 2013 Andrew has been a member of the Board of the Australian Mathematics Trust.

    • David Hogan, James Ruse Agricultural High School, NSW

    • David obtained a PhD (Hierarchical Fair Queuing in Network Gateways) and later worked for nCube in California and the Bell labs. He died in the United States in April 2003, aged 34.

    • Catherine Playoust, Loreto Kirribilli, NSW

    • Australia's first female representative. L Mus A in clarinet, pass with distinction, 1989. BA (Hons I in music), University of Sydney, 1990. Played clarinet in Sydney University's Pro Musica and the SBS Youth Orchestra. Proctor & Gamble Scholarship, 1990. Formerly a member of the University of Sydney's Computational Algebra Group, which develops the Magma Computer Algebra System and a casual with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Completed a Bachelor of Theology at the Catholic Institute of Sydney in 1996. Newman College Archbishop Mannix Travelling Scholarship, 1996-1998. Licentiate in Theology at Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1998. Doctor of Theology (ThD) in New Testament and Christian Origins at Harvard Divinity School, 2006.

    • Ben Robinson, Narrabundah College, ACT, Bronze

    • Ben completed a combined Arts/Science bachelor degree at ANU specialising in Philosophy and Mathematics. He has experimented with self-sufficiency rural living, and is (2003) a single parent. His main interests are in computer programming, sport (especially Australian Football) and music.

    • Terry Tao, Blackwood High School, SA, Bronze

    • BSc (First Class Hons, Pure Maths), Flinders 1992 (the youngest ever). Was later awarded a Fulbright Postgraduate Student Award to study for PhD at Princeton University. Finished his thesis in May 1996 and at the age of 24 became a full Professor in the Department of Mathematics at UCLA. In 2006 he was awarded a FIELDS MEDAL, the highest award in Mathematics, of status equal to that of a Nobel Prize.

    • Kin Yan Chung, Duncraig Senior High School, WA, Silver

    • BSc (First Class Hons, Maths), UWA. Graduated from Princeton University with a PhD in Mathematics in June 1997. Then lived in Vienna, Virginia (not Austria) and working as a Business Analyst for Capital One Services, one of the top ten credit card issuers in the US.

    • Jonathan Potts, Brisbane Grammar School, Qld

    • Completed BE (Elec and Comp) (First Class Honours) UQ 1992. BSc (First Class Hons, Maths), UQ 1993. Worked in engineering and programming jobs from 1994-2000, since then self-employed doing web design. Did 12 months of PhD program at UNSW in 1995 in area of automated design optimisation. Since 2000, increasingly moving from volunteer to paid employment as a sports administrator for ultimate frisbee. Member of Australian Ultimate Frisbee team 1994-2004, since 2000 as captain. Currently (2004) CEO of Australian Flying Disc Association and Secretary-General of World Flying Disc Federation.

    • Luke Seberry, Sydney Grammar School, NSW

    • BEc (Macquarie) + Actuarial studies. Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries worked for AMP, then for Sun Insurance, later in Taiwan studying Mandarin.

    • Terry Tao, Blackwood High School, SA, Silver

    • Selected for the second time. See 1986.

    • Ian Wanless, Phillip College, ACT

    • Has worked for Questacon (The National Science and Technology Centre) and CSIRO's Double Helix Science Club. In 1991 completed Honours in Mathematics at ANU. In 1997 he completed a PhD in combinatorics at ANU, entitled Permanents, Matchings and Latin Rectangles. Following that he undertook postdoctoral work in graph theory at the University of Melbourne. From Oct 1999 to Feb 2003 he was a junior research fellow at Christ Church, Oxford. He then did another postdoc at ANU before being appointed Senior Lecturer at Charles Darwin University at the start of 2005. In 2006 he moved to Monash University where he is a QEII Fellow. He continues his role with AMOC as a member of its Senior Problems Committee.

    • Geoffrey Bailey, St Aloysius College, NSW, Bronze

    • Geoffrey has an Honours Degree in Computer Science from Sydney University. Since graduating he has been working as a computer programmer with the Computational Algebra Group at Sydney University. When Australia started its Informatics Program in 1998 Geoffrey joined the committee for a few years and continues on the problem-setting committees.

    • Martin Bush, Brisbane State High School, Qld, Hon Men

    • BSc with first-class honours in physics in 1994 from UQ, where he was also involved with the Student Union, as editor of Semper Floreat and Treasurer. Moved to ANU in 1996 and in 2000 completed an MSc in Scientific Communication with a thesis on the interaction between Western and Indigenous Australian knowledge systems, and editing Antitheses, the Postgraduate newsletter. In 2002 Martin is employed by Museum Victoria and is a Curator, Science Communication, at the Melbourne Planetarium. A commitment to alternative forms of social organisation is best demonstrated by his enthusiasm for cycling.

    • David Jackson, Sydney Grammar School, NSW

    • Studied at the University of Sydney from 1989. He completed a PhD in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sydney in 1997. His supervisor was Professor Gus Lehrer and the title of his thesis was On nilpotent orbits of type $G_2$. He graduated with his PhD on 29 May 1998. He was due to commence a 2 year post doctoral fellowship at MIT. He died while attending a conference in Denmark in August 1998.

    • Jeremy Liew, Duncraig Senior High School, WA

    • BSc (hons) in Maths and BA in Linguistics from ANU. Two years with McKinsey & Co (management consulting) in Sydney and Johannesburg. Two years at an internet startup called CitySearch in Los Angeles. Stanford for two years to get an MBA. Two years in New York as VP of Strategic Planning for Interactive Corp, an internet and ecommerce holding company that owns CitySearch, Ticketmaster, Home Shopping Network, Expedia, Hotels.com, Match.com and others. Moved to Washington DC in 2002 to be Chief of Staff to the CEO of America Online. In 2004 and 2005 was General Manager of Netscape, responsible for the browser and portal (www.netscape.com). In 2006 is a partner with Lightspeed Venture Partners in Menlo Park, California.

    • Martin O'Hely, Salesian College, Vic

    • B.Sc. with first class honours in pure mathematics (1993) at Monash University. After a very brief time at ANU (March to August 1993) completed an MA in Mathematics in January 1997 and a PhD in mathematics at the University of Minnesota in December 2000. His Thesis title was Extensions of Interacting Particle Systems Methods in Mathematical Population Genetics. At that stage he was already doing a postdoc in the Biology department at the University of Oregon (1999--2001). He then had another postdoc in the Department of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley 2001--2003, followed by a postdoc with the Evolution et Diversite Biologique group at the Universite Paul Sabatier and CNRS in Toulouse 2003-4. In September 2004 he started as a Research Fellow with the University of Queensland site of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems. His interests revolve broadly around stochastic modelling in mathematical biology and especially in population genetics.

    • Terry Tao, Blackwood High School, SA, Gold

    • Selected for the third time. See 1986.

      • Terry receives his Gold Medal from the Prime Minister of Australia, the Rt Hon Bob Hawke.

  • 1989 Braunschweig, West Germany (22nd of 50)

    • Kevin Davey, St Kevin's College, Vic, Bronze

    • Kevin received BSc (Hons) at Monash University in 1992, MA (Mathematics) UCLA in 1996, MA (Physics) University of Pittsburgh in 2003, and PhD in Philsophy at the University of Pittsburgh in 2004. In 2005 he was located at the University of Kansas Philosophy Department. Since 2006 has been in the philosophy department at the University of Chicago and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012.

    • Christopher Eckett, Brisbane Grammar School, Qld

    • BE (Mechanical Engineering, First Class Hons, University Medal), UQ, 1993. MSc (Aeronautics), California Institute of Technology (Caltech), 1995. PhD (Aeronautics), California Institute of Technology, 2000. Currently (2003) working for United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Connecticut, performing computations and analysis for jet engine and scramjet engine combustion research.

    • Philip Gleeson, St Joseph's College, NSW

    • After one year of chemical engineering at Sydney University, Phil switched to a science degree focusing on biology. He continued to study mathematics because it was challenging and it gave him skills other biologists lacked. His Honours project involved modelling the interactions between parasitic wasps and their hosts. Phil is now a data analyst for the Queensland Department of Primary Industries in Cairns. He uses satellite technology and mathematics to model the population of Papaya Fruit Fly and to monitor eradication measures.

    • Mark Kisin, Melbourne Grammar School, Vic, Silver

    • Obtained BSc (First Class Hons, Maths), Monash. He then graduated with a PhD at Princeton University and in 1999 worked at the University of Sydney on an ARC Postdoctoral Fellowship. His research interests are in Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory. In 2003 he was at the University of MĂĽnster. As of 2006 a full Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago. In about 2008 he moved to Harvard.

    • Alan Offer, Caboolture State High School, Qld, Silver

    • BSc (First Class Hons, University Medal) UQ 1994; PhD (finite geometry, supervisors Christine O'Keefe & Rey Casse) Adelaide Uni 2000. Moved to Spain, relaxing for awhile, but then teaching maths and comp sci at St Louis Uni (Madrid campus). In 2002, he moved to Universiteit Gent in Belgium, where his research interests primarily concerned generalized polygons. In 2006 he returned to Australia, left academia, and worked in the private sector and conducted private consultancy, supplemented with some casual University teaching. Since 2008 he has been providing enrichment mathematics at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology. In 2011 he has started a GDipEd at QUT. In 2012 he joined the AMOC Senior Problems Committee.

    • Brian Weatherson, Mazenod College, Vic, Bronze

    • Brian was enrolled in an Arts/Law degree at Monash majoring in philosophy. In 1994 he completed honours in philosophy, with his thesis being in modal logic. He then completed a PhD in philosophy, also at Monash, and discontinued the law degree. After working at Syracuse University, he then became an Assistant Professor in Philosophy at Brown University, Rhode Island.

      • It should be noted that Danny Calegari, Melbourne Grammar School, was originally selected for the team, but withdrew before the team departed.

      • He completed his BA(Hons) at Melbourne University in 1994, and obtained the AO Capell Scholarship for Graduate study at Melbourne. He also obtained the Mary Stella Langford travelling scholarship to Berkeley.

      • 1997: He studied for a PhD at UC Berkeley in "low *dimensional* topology" - i.e. dimensions 2,3,4; e.g.: theory of mapping class groups, the virtual fibration conjecture for 3-manifolds, Seiberg-Witten theory, finite-type invariants.

      • Starting in Fall 2000 he became Benjamin Peirce Associate Professor of Mathematics at Harvard. His research interests are low-dimensional topology, particularly the theory of foliations and geometric structures in 3-manifolds.

    • In 2008 Danny is the Richard Merkin Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at California Institute of Technology.

  • 1990 Beijing, China (15th of 54)

    • Timothy Adam, Scotch College, Vic, Silver

    • Timothy graduated from Science and Engineering at the University of Melbourne and is now working as an engineer.

    • Angelo Di Pasquale, Eltham College, Vic, Bronze

    • BSc (First Class Hons, Maths), Monash. Completed a PhD at Melbourne University in 1999, while holder (1995 to 1998) of the AO Capell Scholarship. The title of his thesis was Links and Complements of Arrangements of Complex Projective Plane Algebraic Curves. It was supervised by Walter Neumann. In 1997 Angelo became Deputy Leader of Australia's IMO team, a position he held until 2001. In 2000 appointed Director of Training for the Australian Mathematical Olympiad Program. In 2002 he became Leader of Australia's IMO Team. Angelo also qualified as L. Mus A. pianoforte in 1993 (music diploma by AMEB for executive abilty, i.e. actual playing, not just study). He also taught some enrichment mathematics at three Victorian High Schools in the periods 1998 to 2000 and 2004 to present.

    • Joseph Lau, North Sydney Boys High School, NSW, Bronze

After graduating with his PhD Ben became a post-doctoral Fellow at RMIT University, before working in the finance industry for some time. In 1999 and 2000 Ben was Deputy Leader of the Australian Informatics Olympiad Team and was been Leader from 2001 to 2008. He was always Director of Training for the Australian Informatics Olympiad Program, during this time from 1998, until elected to the International Scientific Committee of IOI in 2008. In 2009 Ben commenced as a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Queensland. In 2010 he was appointed as a Queen Elizabeth II Research Fellow. In 2012 he was promoted to Associate Professor.

After spending two years working in information theory, he changed direction and began research into algorithms for quantum computers. He finished his thesis in July 2004 and will be joining Google in August 2004.

    • Akshay is just 12 years old when winning this Bronze Medal. He completed First Class Honours in Mathematics at the University of WA in 1997. He was the youngest student to have been admitted to that University and the youngest ever to achieve First Class Honours. In 2002 completed a PhD in Number Theory at Princeton University. In 2004 a Clay Research Fellow at MIT. In 2009, Akshay, now a professor of mathematics at Stanford University, won the 2008 SASTRA Ramanujan prize for outstanding contributions to areas of mathematics influenced by the great Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The prize, worth US$10,000, is only awarded to those under the age of thirty-two (the age of Ramanujan at his time of death). (Thanks to Terry Tao for this news.) Akshay is also the 2013 Mahler Lecturer of the Australian Mathematical Society. In 2018 Akshay has moved from Stanford to Princeton and become just the second Australian to win a Fields Medal.

As of December 2009 he is still at Google Sydney and has worked on Google Tasks, Closure Tools, and Maps Advertising among other things.

    • Konrad commenced in 2007 a double degree in mechatronic engineering and mathematics at the University of Adelaide . He has also been a live-in instructor at recent Olympiad training camps and helping with mathematics enrichment teaching at a few high schools in South Australia.
