Medals were presented at a function held at Government House, Brisbane, on Tuesday 22 September, by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Walter Campbell.

A highlight was the perfect score of 11 year old Terry Tao in the Senior paper. Terry is shown below receiving his medal.

Terry Tao was to become Australia's first Fields Medallist in 2006. In 1986, 1987 and 1988 Terry won Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals at the IMO. Until 2009 no other student from any country has won a Gold Medal before turning 13.

Anna Goldsworthy became a noted Australian writer and classical pianist. In her autobiography Piano Lessons on p76 and 77 she describes her experience of winning her medal in the Australian Mathematics Competition.
