This application deals with the upgrade of the control of a sugar system to incorporate an additional sugar silo, two more production lines and Atex
The end customer is a manufacturer of confectionery. Their throughput has increased to the point where they need a second silo for bulk sugar. As well as this, the base of the existing silo, which housed a screw conveyor, sifter, blower, a few other bits of kit, and the control panel, had been categorised as an Atex area.
On top of this, they wanted to feed the sugar to two new production lines too.
From PJC Systems' point of view, there were several aspects to this project
Replace the Silo Panel with a new one which will cater for 2 silos
Replace the PLC/HMI Panel with one which will cater for the new equipment too
Move PLC & HMI out of the Atex area
Add the feed to 2 new production lines (this got added during the course of the contract)
The project involved panel design, plc and hmi application software, and on site commissioning.
Key components:- Mitsubishi FX3G series PLC, Mitsubishi Q series PLC, Mitsubishi GT2000 series hmi

Replace the Silo Panel with a new one which will cater for 2 silos
Apart from the fact that the existing panel only catered for one silo, it, and the tanker connection point , were in a position which would be obscured by the installation of the new silo.
Consequently, not only was a new panel required, but it had to be positioned approximately 10m away, round the corner of the building.
This shows the location of the old panel, and the location of the new panel with the new silo in position
The old panel was controlled by a Schneider PLC
We chose to use a Mitsubishi FX3G PLC in the new panel.
The main plc was already a Mitsubishi, so it made sense for this to be a Mitsubishi too.
Replace the PLC/HMI Panel with one which will cater for the new equipment
The existing plc was an old Mitsubishi FX which, apart from now being obsolete, didn't have any spare i/o.
We replaced this with a Mitsubishi Q-series plc.
The existing hmi was a Beijers E1101. We replaced this with a Mitsubishi GT2000 series hmi.
Old hmi screen Beijers E1101
New hmi screen Mitsubishi GT2000 series
Move PLC & HMI out of the Atex area
The existing PLC panel was removed, and replaced with an Atex junction box as the means of extending the cabling that went to the old panel so that they would reach the new panel. The alternative would have been to replace all of the existing cabling
Although PJC Systems were on site to assist with any control/connection queries, the installation of the junction box was carried out by Hampton Electrical Systems Limited who we often work closely with.
(PJC Systems do not carry out work external to the Control Panel. Hampton Electrical Systems Ltd details are in our Links section)
Add the feed to 2 new production lines
During the course of the contract a requirement was added to transfer sugar to further production lines. We were able to incorporate this into the same control system, displaying the whole scheme on the one hmi.
