Description / Behaviour

The camera decides whether it should fire the flash depending on the available light. P A behaviour is different from normal.

Red Eye Reduction means the flash will emit a preliminary burst of light to force the subject person's eye iris to close - this will reduce the risk of red eye when the main burst of flash illuminates the scene. Exposure will be calculated based on the mix of ambient light and flash light. Flash always fires in S and M mode.

The flash will be forced to trigger. Exposure will be calculated based on the mix of ambient light and flash light.

The flash will not fire. Normal P A S behaviour will resume.

The flash will be forced to trigger. Exposure will be calculated based on the mix of ambient light and flash light. A preliminary flash burst will illuminate the subject and force the eye's iris to close to reduce red eye.

The flash will be forced to trigger. Exposure will be calculated based on the mix of ambient light and flash light. The flash will synchronise with the first shutter curtain. If shooting light trails, the trails will be behind the subject.

The flash will be forced to trigger. Exposure will be calculated based on the mix of ambient light and flash light. The flash will synchronise with the second shutter curtain. If shooting light trails, the trails will be in front of the subject.

The flash will be forced to trigger. Exposure will be calculated based on ambient light. The flash exposure will not be controlled by the camera.

Under Camera Manual Exposure Mode, if the Flash is set to TTL,

  • User can choose Shutter Speed limited to fastest 1/250th sec

  • F/No is user chosen

Separate Ambient Exposure Compensation vs Flash Exposure Compensation

    • Custom Menu F (Flash) > Exposure Compensation + Flash Compensation > Off - allows separate control of the Flash Exposure Compensation.

    • Super Control Panel > Flash Compensation offers Minus 3 EV to Plus 3 EV range for flash compensation

    • This affects both the free supplied flash unit / built in unit as well as an external unit like the Nissin Di 466

  • Custom Menu F (Flash) > White Balance sets whether WB is toggled for Flash or ambient light

Note:

    • Custom Menu F (Flash) > Slowest Shutter Speed > 1/60th sec (default) sets the slowest camera chosen shutter speed for some of the TTL Flash modes in the table above.

Silent Shutter (from Firmware Update 4.0)

  • The fastest sync speed for silent is 1/15 sec.

  • In fact it appears like the only way to activate flash with a TTL flash model with silent shutter is to activate Focus Bracketing.

  • The minimum number of exposures you can set here is three, the shutter speed will be fixed at 1/13 sec. and the flash is fixed at Manual 1/4. (from Hans van Veluwen)

  • If you use a non TTL flash (no electronic contacts except the centre contact) or a non TTL radio trigger, the flash symbol will be dimmed but the flash will fire.
