WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. WiMAX is a metropolitan area broadband wireless standard. WiMAX implements IEEE 802.16. WiMAX provides data rates of up to 80 Mbps at a maximum range of about 50 km. Most practical implements provide data rates roughly equivalent to DSL, cable modem, or 3G/4G cellular data. WiMAX can use either line-of-sight or non-line-of-sight transmission. Also, it can be either fixed or mobile, with fixed deployments providing higher data rates.
