The access layer is one of three layers in the hierarchical internetworking model. The role of the access layer is to allow host devices to connect to the network. The access layer is typically provisioned by economical layer two switches with high port density.
Although the access layer is primarily known for supporting end user devices like PCs, laptops, and printers, another portion of the access layer also faces outbound from the network in the direction of the ISP. So in general, the access layer is to be found around the edge of any organization's network, with the distribution and core layers located deeper in the network's interior.
