Three pollinator-friendly perennial garden beds were planted in the spring of 2019 along upper Long Mount Eagle Drive. Designed by Natural Resources Design (NRD) in conjunction with the Grounds Committee, the gardens fill the area with great color and plant diversity and bring seasonal beauty to Montebello’s landscape. The beds are along either side of the roadway between Buildings 1 and 2 and at the top of the drive on the tip of the Village Green.
Planted predominately with flowers that provide nectar or pollen, the gardens create an environment that attracts butterflies and other pollinating insects. Dried seeds from plants such as the purple coneflower feed birds in winter. The plants bloom throughout the growing season and provide visual interest and habitat in the off season, as well.

Descriptions of spring and early summer plants are linked in the chart above. Alternatively, see the consolidated description of all of the flowers in our Butterfly Garden, previously published in the Times of Montebello.
Our Montebello Butterfly Gardens iNaturalist site includes labelled photos of the pollinator plantings, all taken by Montebello residents. Its contents complement the Montebello Nature iNaturalist site, which covers wildflowers and other phenomena observed elsewhere on Montebello's grounds.
Our Google Photos site presents a more comprehensive set of images of the species planted in the butterfly gardens, including some photos from the Internet, and sequences the images according to their blooming times:
A series of articles in the Times, published April through October 2021, highlighted the species in the gardens. The species pages linked in the chart above and in the Butterfly Gardens Gallery include and in many cases update the material presented there.
