The 2020 project was particularly timely. A recent study of trees inventoried in 2018 showed that over the last two years more than 5 percent of our big trees (those 15 inches or more in diameter) have been lost, primarily due to natural causes. In addition, many smaller trees have been lost as a result of the recent erosion control work and the removal of invasive species.
Nine tree species were identified as especially helpful in the restoration of our treasured woodlands--setting the stage for generations of good canopy coverage. To ensure that a variety of species would be planted, the Committee established goals in terms of tree species percentages, as shown in this table.
Arbor Day, a celebration of tree planting, is observed on the last Friday in April. Since we prefer to plant trees in the fall, we use Arbor Day as a kick-off for fund-raising for fall planting. This allows us to order the tree stock months in advance of planting to get the best selection. Montebello residents are encouraged to donate funds toward the planting of trees, choosing from a list of native species to be planted in designated woodland locations.
Arbor Day Fundraising Helps Replenish Our Woodlands
Donors specified their preference for a particular species or opted to let the Grounds Committee select the tree type to meet its goal for species diversity. Donations are not linked to an individual tree, but donors now have maps showing where each species was planted.
The 2020 Arbor Day fundraising focused on repopulating areas where trees had to be removed as part of the erosion control work of 2018 and 2019. Maps show the woodland locations targeted for the 2020 Arbor Day plantings.
There is no guarantee that any particular tree will survive, and no additional irrigation equipment is being installed. Tree survival will be encouraged by careful planning of tree locations and space between trees. The survival rate of the 2018 tree donations, which had little tree watering, was 88 percent (excluding dogwoods), which is considered a good rate.
Donations and dedications are listed here, and also will be recorded in a tree donation book maintained by the office.
Forty-four households donated funds for a total of 55 trees between April 24 and July 3, 2020. Montebello management identified matching funds to raise the total planting to 110 trees, as described in the Times article, Arbor Day Tree Donations: Double the Fun.
A donation of $250 covered the cost of one tree, its delivery and installation, and fencing for protection from deer. View photos of the various stages of the installation process, accomplished in early October 2020.
