LOEWENTHAL & HESSE

A partnership between Edward Loewenthal of Germany, a button manufacturer, and Max Hesse. Both families were general merchants rather than glass manufacturers. Two of their registrations were in the Manchester area, but later ones were in London.

SLACK & BROWNLOW

Design Number

An aquarium and fernery combined. This looks like it was made in two pieces. The bottom piece is shaped like a wide celery vase. The centre of the vase contains a long twisted stem on which sits a small bowl which is level with the top of the vase. The second piece is effectively an oval lid to put over the top of the other piece. Put together the item is shaped a bit like a fat torpedo.

CAROLINE AMELIA ELIZABETH SWALLOW

Born in Newcastle circa 1822, Mrs Swallow was living in the Salford area by the time of the 1881 census. Her husband was a cotton dealer.

A rather strange object and it is not at all clear which bit of it is made out of glass. We have a metal base on which rests something looking halfway between a cake and a deep crusty pizza decorated with flowers! In the centre stands a Greek pillar with an inscription on the base which has been crossed out. The inscription reads "To the memory of the officers and men of the army and navy <some words unreadable> 1878 and 1879". Overhanging the pillar is a large fern or palm tree.

EMIL AUGUST THOMSON

There are only two guys named Emil Thomson on the census. One was a servant in London and the other was a Norwegian sailor in the Manchester area who was in his early twenties at the time of this registration. Neither seem all that convincing but in the absence of other evidence we'll have to say this was registered by the Norwegian...
