Description

Tobacco jar with lid

A highly decorative circular tobacco jar, this has four panels around the body each of which has a male figure symbolic of the four continents listed around the lid - America, Europe, Asia, Africa.

The figures around the base correspond to the continent names above on the lid; America - a cowboy, Europe - a man,

smoking a pipe, Asia - a man in pantaloons and a turban with long 2-pointed beard, Africa - a dancing African in native costume.

The lid handle on the top of the jar is a miniature version of the Derbyshire Britannia piece with Union Jack shield.

There are 2 mould varieties. The Opaque Blue example has a raised rim for a lid to rest on. The Opaque White example has a recessed rim to hold the smaller diameter lid more securely. An Opaque Black example has been reported.

(thanks to Larry Wilson for detailed info on this piece)
