Dr. Andy Finlay

Andrew G. Finlay, Jr. would eventually follow the direction of Dr. Andrew G. Finlay, Sr. and become a household name in the Marshall County medical community. Young Andy’s father served as the Marshall County High School team doctor.

Andy Finlay’s athletic and academic achievements were just starting at MCHS where in 1954 he was captain of the football team. The All-County player lettered in basketball and football three years. He was the valedictorian of the Marshall County High School Class of 1955.

The Fall of 1955 found Andy playing fullback for the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. He went on to be football co-captain in 1957 and captain in 1958. He was also named honorable mention Little All-American in 1958 and graduated with honors in 1959.

Andy earned a medical degree in 1963 at Tulane University. Dr. Andy Finlay’s year of internship was followed by two years (1964-1966) in the U.S. Navy. The first year at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Charleston, S.C. and the second year as Medical Officer aboard the USS Woodrow Wilson, Polaris Submarine.

Finlay returned to Marshall County in 1970 as our first internist. He helped establish the first intensive care units at Arab-Guntersville and Boaz-Albertville hospitals.

This past “Citizen of the Year” in Albertville continues to lead and serve in his profession, church and community. Marshall County has truly been honored and blessed with the life of Dr. Andy Finlay, Jr.
