Shannon Sloan

Albertville’s head basketball coach for 35 years (1956-1991), Shannon Sloan is a native of Kentucky who played four years of basketball at Union College in Barbourville, Ky. Following his freshman year, there was a two-year interruption for military duty in Korea.

Sloan came to Sand Mountain to marry Wanda Sumners of Boaz and was hired as Albertville’s head coach after learning about the opening by reading about it in the Sand Mountain Reporter.

His record at Albertville includes 564 wins and 349 losses, with his best season in 1959-60 winning 30, losing six and finishing third in the State Tournament. The Aggies were Marshall County champions 10 times, and Sloan was conference Coach of the Year four times.

At the school, Sloan served as golf coach (1960-1978) and was named county Coach of the Year in 1977. He was track coach from 1959-1968 and assistant football coach (1956-1967).

Other honors include Educator of the Year in 1977, Alabama High School Athletic Director and Coaches Association Achievement Award in 1987, Alabama Reunion Committee recognition for contribution of athletics to Albertville High School and in 1999 inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.
