Eugene Griep

Eugene Griep was a student athlete at Marshall County High School from 1955-1958. During that time, he earned All-County, All-Conference and All-State honors in football and was named Alabama Back of the Week during the 1958 season. In basketball he made All-County and All-District.

Griep quarterbacked the Wildcats to a 16-3-1 record, including one of the greatest upsets in Wildcat history. The 1957 classic featured Scottsboro, ranked #1 with 12 straight wins behind quarterback Pat Trammell versus an upset-minded M.C.H.S. Wildcats. Griep picked a third period Pat Trammell punt out of the air on his own 44-yard line and tightroped the sidelines for a breathtaking 56 yards into the Scottsboro end zone. Charles Singleton’s point after touchdown gave M.C.H.S. a 7-6 victory. This was the second straight game in which the Marshall County Wildcats did not get a penalty.

Griep’s career continued at Jacksonville State University, where he currently holds the record for longest fumble return for a touchdown (98 yards in 1962). For 21 years (from 1960-1981), he held the record for the longest interception for a touchdown (98 yards).

Eugene Griep taught and coached at Weaver Junior High, Jacksonville High, Hart County, Georgia, Hueytown and Boaz high schools.
