James "Shorty" Smith" has

•  Volunteered for over 30 years coaching recreational baseball teams

•  Volunteered for over 25 years coaching the Arab High School baseball team

• Helped coach the first ever Arab Junior High baseball team

• Coached Gilliam Springs Baptist Church softball teams

• Coached Arab’s semi-pro baseball team

• Organized and ran a free baseball clinic for all the youth in the Arab area

• Was recognized in 1981 by Arab City Schools as the Friend of Education for his years of service and volunteer coaching

•  Was recognized in 2007 as an Earth Angel

• Was named Citizen of the Year in 2009 for the City of Arab

• Had a monument dedicated to him and Hall of Fame inductee Coach Bill Morgan at the Arab High School baseball field for all their years of service.
