Delmar McCuistion
Del was born in Tooele UT in August 28, 1895. He was 12 or 13 when he moved out to the McCuistion ranch near Montello NV.
Del was in the service during WW1. He was drafted, and went to officer training, becoming a 2nd Lt. The war was over before he had to go overseas.
Florence Carlson came to the McCuistion ranch specifically to teach the children. Del & Florence married in June 1923.
He was a forest ranger down in the Kiabab forest.
When they moved to Montello NV in 1937, Del tried to start the Montello Cafe. He learned to cook the hard way. This began his lifelong love of cooking. He was renowned for the parties they threw; the food was always outstanding.
They moved to Elko NV to find better education and employment. Harold West had a distribution concern for ice, coal and fuel, and encouraged Del to join him. Del established the Elko Ice and Fuel Company. Later he had the opportunity to become a Texaco distributor, which he also did. He had a bulk plant down by the railroad, 13th St on the east side of Elko. His customers covered from Wells to Carlin. Sometimes he would make two trips in a day to Wells.
He was a member of the Shriners organization in Elko. He loved to fish; he liked stream fishing for trout. He was also a golfer. He liked to work with wood. He made their dining room table, which was a beautiful piece of furniture.
Del enjoyed having the latest gadgets. He got a Polaroid camera when they came out. Then an 8mm film camera. He had a reel to reel tape recorder.
One of his favorite sayings was "He who tooteth not his own horn, the same shall not be tooted". Del didn't have a lot of formal education or training, but he was a self-made man, and did well with his life. He married a college graduate when it was very rare for females to go to college, let alone graduate. All his children went to college; there never was any question or discussion about should or ought or can.
Del died in 1980 and his ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
