Joe Friar of Kidderminster beat Ian Clarke to win the Bennett Cup in a game played at Worcester.
James Allsopp scored an excellent 4.5/5 in the Megafinal played at Malvern and goes on to play in the Gigafinal.

James Allsopp represented Worcestershire in the national quarter-final of the U1650 competition against Surrey. The county lost 9.5-6.5 but James won his game against a stronger-rated opponent. Results.

Friedrich Quigley won the 2023-2024 Club Championship with 5.5 from Matthew Jordan and Lee Davis with 5. Pierre Lipinsky came 4th with 4.5.
Malvern's final match of the Championship has been won by default. This means that the team is undefeated this season in both leagues, winning 14 and drawing 4 matches.
In the latest round of the Club Championship, there were wins for Pierre Lipinsky and Lee Davis whilst Matthew Jordan drew with Friedrich Quigley.

James Allsopp pushed black's king out into the open on board 4 and with checkmate imminent, black resigned with his king on b2. White had a strong attack against John Chester on board 3 but dropped a piece and John went on to win. Brian Turner sealed the win by agreeing a draw on board 1. Results

The match was very close but was sealed when Friedrich Quigley won what appeared to be a drawn endgame with a nice tactic and Brian Turner converted a kingside attack by forcing black to give up his queen for a rook. Worcestershire lost 7-9 to a very strong Lincolnshire side in the Midland Counties Team Championship. Lee Davis and Brian Turner represented Malvern and both drew against higher-graded opponents. Results.

The away side defaulted board 5 and Ian Clarke won on board 4 but the win was sealed by excellent draws from Lee Davis and Brian Turner. Lee was the exchange down but forced a draw with the bishop pair and Brian set up a central attack with his major pieces that eventually forced white to take the draw. Results.

Malvern had an excellent 3-2 home win against current champions Halesowen. There was a very good win for Brian Turner and Geoffrey Herbert sealed the win by agreeing a draw in a complicated position with very little time left.

Malvern had a successful season in the Worcestershire Championship finishing second to Halesowen. There were 6 teams again this year and we finished with 7 wins, 2 draws, and a loss. Alexandr Mityaev scored an impressive 6.5/7 on board 1.
Malvern also did very well in the Worcestershire Challengers, again narrowly finishing second, this time to Longbridge by just one game point. Again there were 6 teams and we finished with 5 wins, 4 draws, and a loss. George Charman was the most successful Malvern player with 5 out of 5.
Lee Davis and Ian Clarke both took part in the Bennett Cup and made it an all-Malvern final. The first game was drawn but Lee played an excellent second game to win the competition. There were no Malvern players in the Ball Cup last season.Â
Lee Davis, Brian Turner and Ian Clarke played for Worcestershire in the Minor Counties whilst James Allsopp represented the County in the U1650 competition.
Malvern again had excellent representation at the closed Worcester County Championships congress with 6 players taking part. Lee Davis became Veteran Champion. He finished in 3rd place, just half a point behind Peter Kitson of Worcester who became County Champion and Joseph Friar of Kidderminster. Joshua Clarke scored 2 out of 4 and retained the title of Junior Champion on a tiebreak from James Allsopp who also scored 2 out of 4. Ian Clarke scored 2.5 out of 4 and both Brian Turner and George Charman scored 2 out of 4.
The Club Championship was won by Ian Clarke with 7 out of 8. Brian Turner was second with 6.5 out of 8 and Lee Davis third with 5.5 out of 8.
Lee Davis represented Wales in the European Seniors Team Championship and performed superbly to score 6 out of 9 on board 3. With 3 wins and 6 draws he was undefeated throughout.
James Allsopp finished an excellent second out of 22 entrants in the Shropshire Junior Chess Tournament under 14 section with 4.5/6 and also qualified for the gigafinal after scoring 3.5 out of 6 in a competitive megafinal in Birmingham.
