There were two boards defaulted giving Malvern a 1.5-0.5 start but the Michael's were heavily outgraded on the two boards that were played. Michael Butcher on board 2 had won a pawn and went into the ending with a slight advantage but he blundered a bishop and had to resign.

Boards two and four were fairly quiet draws, with little advantage established from the openings.
On Board 3 John pressed for a win against his old club, exchanging a bishop and a knight for rook and a pawn in order to attack on the king side. Mark exchanged some pieces and held on for a draw.
On Board one there was much tactical play and eventually an ending was reached with rook and pawn versus bishop and three pawns. This looked to be a draw but Geoff over-pressed in the final stage when both players were relying on time increments.

On board 1 Geoff Marchant played Lee Davis who on this occasion was playing for Abergavenny. Geoff made an error in a side-line of the Pirc Defence which led to a slightly bigger error from Lee, as he forgot the correct refutation for Black and lost a rook for two pawns. At one point white missed a mate-in-two and then Lee fought back but Geoff was finally able to hold on for a win.
Michael Butcher played very well in his game on board 2, keeping it even until his opponent spotted a knight sacrifice on g7. While Michael didn't accept the sacrifice, his position deteriorated and he couldn't hold on.
Ivan Stringer made a guest appearance for Malvern on board 3 but became a little passive in an exchange French and lost a pawn. After further exchanges and the imminent loss of another pawn, Ivan resigned.
