June 17th

Lee Davis and Ian Clarke drew their first game of the Bennett Cup final.

June 10th

Joshua and Ian Clarke played in the Cotswold Congress at Gloucester in the final week of May. Josh scored 3/6 in the major whilst Ian scored 4/6 in the Open. Ian won the U2000 grading prize and was also the winner of the Gloucestershire Individual Championship Trophy. Results.

May 24th

Lee Davis beat John Varilone in their Bennett Cup semi-final and will now play Ian Clarke in the final.

May 20th

The Worcestershire U1650 county side lost 10.5-5.5 to Warwickshire in their Quarter-Final match. James Allsopp represented Malvern and won his game. Full results.

May 14th

Lee Davis and Ian Clarke represented Malvern in Saturday's knockout County fixture against a strong Cambridgeshire side played at a neutral venue in Leicestershire. The score was tied with three boards to go but Cambridgeshire pulled ahead to take the match 9.5-6.5. Lee drew his game. Full results can be found here.

May 11th

Malvern traveled to Longbridge for the final match of their Challengers campaign and came away with a 3-1 win against the new League champions. James Allsopp and George Charman had excellent wins. Malvern finished second in the League, as they did in the Championship.

The 2022-23 Club Championship has now finished. Ian Clarke came first with 7/8 from Brian Turner 6.5/9 and Lee Davis 5.5/9.

James Allsopp finished with 3.5/6 in a competitive section of the Birmingham Megafinal and has qualified for the Gigafinal.

Lee Davis drew with John Varilone in their Bennett Cup semi-final. They will play again with reversed colours with the winner playing Ian Clarke in the final.

April 28th-Miroslaw Woron drew with Pierre Lipinsky in the Club Championship.

Lee Davis beat John Knee in the Club Championship.

April 13th

Ian Clarke beat Aiden Griffiths in the Bennett Cup and is through to the final where he will play either Lee Davis or John Varilone.

April 12th

Malvern traveled to Redditch for their final match of the Championship season and came away with an excellent 3-2 win thanks to victories from Joshua Clarke and Alexandr Mityaev. Malvern have had a good season and will probably finish second in the league with seven wins, two draws, and a loss. Before the match, Redditch were just below Malvern in the table and could have finished second with a big win in this match and also in their final match. April 7th

Alexandr Mityaev beat James Allsopp in the Club Championship.

April 5th

Malvern beat Kidderminster 3-2 in their penultimate Championship fixture. The match could have gone either way but wins from George Charman and Alexandr Mityaev got Malvern over the line. Full results can be found here.

Lee Davis beat James Allsopp and Matthew Jordan drew with brian Turner in the Club Championship.

March 29th

Malvern won their latest Challengers League match 4-0 away at Kidderminster with all their juniors playing really well. Full results can be found here.

March 24th

James Allsopp finished an excellent second out of 22 entrants in the Shropshire Junior Chess Tournament under 14 section with 4.5/6.

Lee Davis and Ian Clarke are through to the semi-final stage of the Bennett Cup. Lee defeated Aiden Griffiths of Worcester who will be Ian's next opponent. Lee will play John Varilone of Kidderminster.

Malvern beat Kidderminster in a close match at Malvern, 3.5-1.5 thanks to wins from Brian Turner and Alexandr Mityaev. Full results can be found here.

March 6th

Malvern travelled to Stourbridge in the Challengers League and performed really well, winning the match 3-1. James Allsopp and George Charman won their games. Full results can be found here.

Pierre Lipinsky beat John Chester in the Club Championship.

Malvern got back to winning ways with a 4-1 result at home to Worcester. There were wins for Lee Davis, Alexandr Mityaev and Ian Clarke. Full results can be found here.

Feb 25th

Lee Davis, Brian Turner and Ian Clarke represented Malvern in Saturday's county fixture against Warwickshire played at Worcester. Worcestershire managed an excellent 10.5-5.5 win to qualify for the next stage of the competition. Brian and Lee drew their games. Full results can be found here.

Feb 24th

Malvern hosted Longbridge in the Challengers League and came away with their 4th consecutive 2-2 draw. James Allsopp won his game.

Malvern welcomed Stourbridge in their latest Challengers League fixture and despite wins for John Chester and Matthew Jordan the team chalked up their third consecutive 2-2 draw. Full results can be found here.

Feb 10th

The Stourbridge away match in the Challengers League has been scheduled for March 6th.

Malvern welcomed Redditch in their latest Challengers League fixture. The match was drawn 2-2 but this time all the games finished as draws. Full results can be found here.

Jan 29th

Worcestershire beat Warwickshire 10-4 in their second U1650 fixture of the season. James Allsopp represented Malvern and won his game. Full results can be found here.

Jan 28th

Malvern welcomed Worcester in their latest Challengers League fixture. All the games were decisive and with two wins each, the match was drawn. James Allsopp and John Chester won their games. Full results can be found here.

The Championship match away to Kidderminster has been postponed and will now be played on April 5th.

Lee Davis and Brian Turner represented Malvern in Saturday's county fixture against Lincolnshire played in Leicestershire. Lincolnshire won 10-6 and full results can be found here.

Malvern were at home to Longbridge in their latest Championship fixture and came away with a 4-1 victory. There were wins for Geoffrey Herbert, Brian Turner and Ian Clarke. Full results can be found here.

Malvern welcomed Kidderminster in their third Challengers League fixture and chalked up their second victory, thanks to wins from Geoffrey Herbert and a well-played rook and pawn endgame from Pierre Lipinsky. Full results can be found here.

Malvern beat Worcester 4-1 in their latest Championship fixture which was played away from home. There were wins for Brian Turner and Ian Clarke but the highlight was a well-played rook and pawn endgame by Alexandr Mityaev to score the final point. Full results can be found here.

George Charman drew with Brian Turner in the Club Championship.

James Allsopp won the Worcestershire Junior Rapid tournament held at Alvechurch on the 19th of December. There were over 20 entrants and in a hard-fought tournament, five players scored 4/5, with James winning on tie-break.

Dec 15th

Malvern travelled to Worcester for their second Challengers fixture and came away with a 3-1 win. George Charman, Joshua Clarke and Ian Clarke won their games. Full results can be found here.

Nov 18th

Pierre Lipinksy drew with Ian Clarke, John Knee drew with Brian Turner and Matthew Jordan beat James Allsopp in the Club Championship.

Nov 11th

Malvern drew their latest Championship fixture 2.5-2.5 at home to Halesowen. All five boards finished as draws with the final three games sharing the point at roughly the same time. Full results can be found here.

Malvern travelled to Redditch for their opening match in the Challengers League. It was fantastic to field a team with three juniors who all fought hard but the match was narrowly lost despite a win for George Charman. Full results can be found here.

The Malvern Chess Club AGM will be held at Manor Park, Malvern on September 3rd at 7:45.

Aug 22nd

Malvern had excellent representation at the closed Worcester County Championships congress with 7 players taking part. Lee Davis, Brian Turner and Ian Clarke finished tied second with 3/4, half a point behind Stewart Fishburne of Halesowen. Lee won the veteran title and Ian the senior title. John Chester scored 2/4. The junior title was the last to be decided with Joshua Clarke, 2.5/4, finishing just ahead of George Charman, 2/4. James Allsop had a couple of excellent draws.


August

In an abridged version of the County League, there were initially 6 entrants but two teams were unable to finish their fixtures and Malvern eventually finished 4th with a win, 2 draws and 3 losses. Brian Turner and John Chester were Malvern's most successful players with 4/6 and 2/3.

Lee Davis, Brian Turner, Ian Clarke and Kieran Lappin all played for the Worcestershire Minor Counties team.

Lee Davis played for Wales in the European Chess Championship and shared the Woodcock Prize for enterprising chess with Joe Friar of Kidderminster for an entertaining game between them in the Worcestershire League which can be found here.
