Cell Membrane (also known as the plasma membrane)

The cell membrane separates the inside of the cell from the outside of the cell.

Function- It controls what comes into and goes out of the cell. It maintains homeostasis and keeps the cell in balance. It protects and supports the contents within the cell. The cell membrane separates the cell from its external environment, and is selectively permeable (controls what gets in and out).

Structure- a bilipid membraneous layer composed of proteins and carbohydrates. It is fluid like.

It protects the cell and provides stability, helps maintain homeostasis.

Proteins are found embedded within the plasma membrane, with some extending all the way through in order to transport materials.

Carbohydrates are attached to proteins and lipids on the outer lipid layer.
