Themes

Develop weekly or monthly themes! Librarian Judy Brown, at Elger Bay Elementary, presents different themes in the library to promote a particular genre of books or a specific topic. Maybe the topic is a sport such as soccer or baseball, perhaps the topic is the solar system, or the rain forest, or Native Americans, or the sea, or sea animals, or forest animals, or earthquakes, or even volcanoes, . . . . . . . well, you get the idea. The possibilities are endless!  Then she gathers books, both fiction and non-fiction, and makes a display, decorates the library with the theme, and even might have students participate in some kind of contest, like a poster-making contest using that theme. Perhaps you can have a theme about a particular book series, to promote a new book in the series, or a themed book character.

Here are some example themes that Librarian Judy Brown has used at Elger Bay Elementary:

·         Animal themes (Pigs, Dogs and Cats)

·         Down by the Sea

·         Pirate Ahoy

·         Wonderful World!

·         Laugh It up at your library (humorous stories)

·         Books Rock!

·         For fifth graders only (usually books about Middle School)

·         Dragons

·         Kids Just Like us (stories from around the world)

·         Road Trip (books from different states)

·         Poetry

·         School Daze

And, some of her most popular ones were:
