Book Reports you say? Well, let's find a way to make book reports fun! Here's how!
First, I want to introduce you to a wonderful web resource. It's a Scholastic site for teachers called: Classroom Activities: 25 Book Report Alternatives. Ideas for Grades K-8! Here are a few examples:
v Create a travel brochure for the setting of the story or scrapbook pages about key characters
v Write a different ending for the book
v Pretend you are a talk show host and interview the main character
v Create a book jacket, including illustrations, an enticing synopsis, author bio, and favorable reviews
v Write a news article about an important event from the book
v Dramatize a scene from the story with other students or using puppets
v Prepare a television commercial about your book. Act out the commercial for your classmates
v Draw a classroom mural depicting a major scene(s) from the book
Back to one of my favorite books for school librarians: The School Librarian's Grab Bag by Nancy Polette. On pages 36-39, she takes you through several wonderful ideas. For instance:
- Summarize a book using an acrostic poem using the book's title.
- Write the Who, What, When, Where, Why Report
- How about Story Boards?
