Poetry Month

“Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture.”

April is National Poetry Month. Feature a different poet each week during the month of April in your school library! Or feature several at a time! Display all types of books on poetry, have poetry readings, display poetry posters and artwork, and have a poetry contest. Invite students to find their favorite poem by their favorite poet.  Have poetry booktalks and talk about the history of poetry!
