Majors Needing Foreign Language Credits in Arizona Universities

Hi Kelly!

I'm Curtis Kleinman, the world languages department chair at Yavapai College.

I have a question for you!

Is there a place on AZTransfer.com where we can see all of the degrees that an AZ university offers and whether those degrees require foreign language proficiency in one long scroll down? I have used this old link up until about a few months ago when this link died ( http://aztransmac2.asu.edu/cgi-bin/WebObjects/ATASS.woa/wa/DegreePathwayAZ ), but I can't find this information on the new website just by navigating around.

Perhaps your IT person can access the link above on the legacy website and confirm that this tool actually did exist in the past.

Currently, since this information does not exist on the AZtransfer.com site (or, at least, I can't find it) students have to navigate to each university individually and filter through a lot of information to find out if their degree is going to require the study of a foreign language. I have found these links for you here below:

At UofA this information can be found here: https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/second-language-requirement-undergraduate-degrees

At ASU this information can be found here by using the filter "Requires a Second Language": https://webapp4.asu.edu/programs/t5/programs/Letter/ALL/undergrad/false

At NAU this information can be found here: https://degree-search.nau.edu/degrees/undergraduate/?ac=ugrd

However, at NAU, students cannot use any filter for "foreign language," they have to click on each degree one-by-one to determine if there is a foreign language requirement.

As you can see, the universities have this information, and previously on AZ Transfer, this information was neatly compiled and helped students tremendously when planning out their undergraduate study, especially concerning the 0, 8, or 16 credits that will need to be devoted to foreign language study in order to earn their BS or (and especially) their BA.

Hey Friend,

The below links can be used to determine if a specific bachelor’s degree has a foreign language requirement at the public universities.

ASU: https://webapp4.asu.edu/programs/t5/programs/Letter/ALL/undergrad/false

NAU: https://degree-search.nau.edu/degrees/undergraduate/?ac=ugrd

UofA: https://catalog.arizona.edu/policy/second-language-requirement-undergraduate-degrees

There used to be one link on AZ Transfer for all three universities, but they have stopped supporting that page on their website, because it was too hard to maintain according to AZ Transfer Pres. Kelly Robles.

Anyway, if you click above, everyone at UofA has to take either two or four semesters of foreign language (BS and BA respectively) and most BA’s at NAU and ASU require four semesters.

Up until just this year, taking foreign language at YC has not fulfilled YC AGEC requirements, but now students can take SPA 101 and 102 to fulfill their AGEC-A 6-credit “Options” requirement and SPA 201 and 202 are on the Arts and Humanities list which is a 6-credit requirement. So, in short, most of the foreign language courses at YC now count toward the AGEC-A at YC as well as the 2 or 4-semester foreign language requirement for bachelor’s degrees at the public universities.

I think all the advisers know this, but they might not have the three links above that might help them in advising students in or out of taking Spanish or American Sign Language at Yavapai College.
