Placement

Welcome to the Spanish Placement Page for Yavapai College

If you are reading this, you probably are wondering which Spanish class at YC is right for you. You may have already had extensive Spanish study in school, or maybe you've studied abroad. Whatever the case may be, we're glad you're here. Often students with some Spanish experience might find starting Spanish with the SPA 101 course tedious or repetitive. You may very well be ready for more of a linguistic challenge, many Spanish students are. Luckily for you, we have a Spanish placement system to determine just exactly where you're level is in Spanish so you can begin your study at YC with the correct course. Although you may test into a more advanced course than SPA 101, you may want to consider how this decision will effect your credit situation and transfer. Otherwise, to begin the placement process, simply follow the three simple steps below.

1. Take our Spanish placement quiz-- http://www.quia.com/quiz/4568974.html --This quiz will test your written abilities in Spanish. You will have a maximum of one hour to complete the quiz. You should not utilize any books, Internet resources, friends or any other outside sources during the quiz. All you need is your brain and the keyboard. As you complete the quiz, after a time, you might realize that you no longer can provide answers and you have resulted to guessing. You might want to stop and submit the quiz right there. The quiz is designed to know more Spanish than you in order to accurately place all levels of Spanish learners, and although you may not qualify to enter SPA 202 according to the quiz results, you very well might qualify to enter SPA 102, for example.

2. After you have completed the placement quiz, send your instructor an email. Often that instructor will be me, curtis.kleinman@yc.edu or perhaps jared.reynolds@yc.edu if you are on the Verde Campus or you might have a different Spanish instructor all together. When in doubt, you can send the email to me, Curtis Kleinman and I will see that the information gets to the correct people. The email serves to let your instructor know that you have completed the quiz. He/she will then go in, grade your quiz, give you a score, and advise you as to proper placement. Very important: In the email to your instructor, make sure that you include your Full Name and Y number. A "Y number" is like your Yavapai College ID number. We associate it with your name on all registration materials. Without it, we cannot overide you into the correct course that you qualify for. "Y numbers" are located on nearly all written YC registration materials and on the web, usually in the upper right hand corner of your schedule. If you do not know how to find your "Y number" please see 2a below, or contact the YC registration office (928-776-2149--Prescott office). If you know your "Y number" procede to number three below.

2a. Finding your "Y number" is simple. Follow the steps below and you can't go wrong:

a. Go to www.my.yc.edu

b. In the “home” tab you will see, somewhere on your screen, a “My Services” box. In that box you will find a link titled “My registration add/drop”. Click on this link.

c. Next you will come to a page titled, “Registration”. Click on the link that reads “Register/Drop Classes”.

d. Once you arrive at the “add/drop classes” page (see below) you will see your “Y number” in the upper right hand corner of your screen (see red oval below).

e. Copy and paste this number and send it to me (curtis.kleinman@yc.edu ) or to your instructor.

3. After you have sent your instructor an email informing him/her that you have taken the placement quiz, you will need to wait, possibly a few days (maybe even more during the summer months), for word from your professor or a Yavapai College administrator informing you of the class that you qualify for, based on your quiz results, and confirming that you have been given overide access to register for said class online. Once you receive this confirmation email you will be able to register for your Spanish class online as normal (click to go to the registration page--you will need your username and password to log-in). If you have any difficulties registering after receiving this confirmation email, contact the registration office (928-776-2149--Prescott office) or email your instructor. What if you don't know your username or password, even though you've used YC computers before to log-in or you're sure you've taken a class before? Well, odds are that you are still in the system. Find your username and password by using YC's username and password recovery system. Just go to www.yc.edu/password. Follow the onscreen tutorial and your username and password will be restored to you via email.
