FNM EARLY BIRD SPECIAL-

Leisure Time Games Dishes Up Early Tournament Time For The Magic The Gathering Fans:

For those of you who don't know, Leisure Time Games is an Advance Plus location for Wizards of the Coast. This designates our store as a place that goes the extra mile to promote game play to the local community.

One such way we show our support is to provide not only a variety of games to play, but a variety of designated times to play them. For instance, we understand that not everyone can be here on Friday night during Friday Night Magic until 11:00 PM or even later some times. So, we have an earlier tournament for those of you who can make it.

Every Friday, starting at 12:00 PM, we start taking sign ups for a FNM Standard Tournament. The tournament begins at 1:00 PM, is considered a Casual Event, therefore entry will be free. Prize support comes in the form of that month's FNM Promo Card, which will be given to the first place player, the second place player and 1 to a random participant. This assumes a tournament of at least 8 players.

We'll see you folks then

LEISURE TIME GAMES TO HOST MAGIC: THE GATHERING ADVANCED LEAGUE AND TOURNAMENT PLAY

As announced at the Grand Prix Trial Las Vegas on Saturday April 11, starting this Thursday, Leisure Time Games will be hosting league and tournament play for advanced players of Magic the Gathering.

This weekly event will be for players who are interested in taking the steps they need to improve their game, as well as for those who are on their way, but would like extra game play time to improve their overall skills.

For now, this weekly event will be tied to the next major Magic the Gathering event sponsored by Wizards of the Coast, that we here at Leisure Time Games are hosting pre-events for. Since the next major event will be Grand Prix Las Vegas, which is a Sealed Modern Masters Event, our events here on Thursdays will focus on, but will not be limited to, the Modern Format. Games will be either free play format, or tournament format (Planeswalker Points X1) if there are 8 or more participants.

If you are a skilled player of Magic the Gathering, or would like to become one, come to Leisure Time Games every Thursday. Game play will begin at 5:00 PM and run until 8:00 PM. You are welcome to come in earlier if you wish.

See you then

March 23, 2015

What a great weekend,

Another Prerelease Weekend is in the books. This was without a doubt the largest turnout for a prerelease weekend since going to the 6 tournament format. I'll be posting video and stills before too long. Please bear with me, I'm still new to that whole Videographer thing.

Until then, here's a little insight as to how it all went:

The Good:

1. Huge turn out- see The Bad #2 for further details

2. Most of the tournament packs went evenly-Usually of the 5 different Prerelease Packs, 1 goes fast, 2 go slower, and 2 barely get chosen at all. This time only 1 was the black sheep of the set (I'm looking at you Silumgar)

The Bad:

1. Late start both days- Anything can happen and it usually does. No excuses, I'll work on this folks.

2. So may people came we had to turn people away at the final tournament on Sunday due to lack of product. I suppose that's a good problem, but a problem nonetheless. Sorry about that.

The Ugly:

My laptop crashed, causing an already delayed Saturday event to get delayed even longer. That was a real bummer, but I hope to have this glitch taken care of by the next big MTG event.

Speaking of our next big MTG event:

THE NEXT UPCOMING BIG MTG EVENTS

1. Dragons of Tarkir Release Weekend

This will be this weekend, March 27 - 29, starting with FNM on Friday. Then we'll also be hosting sealed deck events on both Saturday at 3:00 PM and Sunday at 11:00 AM. We'll be giving promo cards to all who participate in any of these events; a foil promo Deathbringer Regent while supplies last. This will be on top of the usual FNM/Sealed event prize support we give out.

2. Grand Prix Trial Las Vegas

Then, after that, we'll be hosting another Grand Prix Trial Las Vegas, on Saturday April 11. You can find more details here:

Grand Prix Trial Las Vegas II

3. Dragons of Tarikir Game Day Weekend

Next, on April 18 - 19 will be the Dragons of Tarkir Game Day Weekend. This will be Standard Format, and more info will follow soon.

4. PPTQ Milwaukee

As if that isn't enough, during our next Games Day Event; Con de Mayo/Free Comic Book Day on May 2:

Pre Pro Tour Qualifier Milwaukee

5. Grand Prix Trial Las Vegas

Finally, on May 16 all these major events will be followed up by our last of the Pro Tour Qualifiers for the Las Vegas Grand Prix:

Grand Prix Trial Las Vegas III

Once again everyone, thanks for coming. It seems all of our events are getting bigger and bigger, and none of this is possible without all of you.

See you soon

Interview with Corbin L., Representing Team Leisure at the San Jose Grand Prix Team Sealed Event

LTG- Thanks for coming in and sharing your experience with us today. First off, how was the venue?

CL- When we got there, there was another convention going on- bunch of folks in suits everywhere. The actual event we were in was in a large tent. It was a nice enough place. The ground was a cement slab, so it was designed to be there.

LTG-What did you folks do there for day one?

CL- We got there at 11:45, and there was a practice Sealed Team Event going on at 12:00, so we jumped in on that. We found out after losing round 1 that it was a single elimination event. So, we entered a sealed event.

Later that evening, we went to dinner. One of the members wanted to ask the desk clerk if anything was open and nearby. We told him Denny’s would be the only option, but he wanted to check anyway. Turns out the desk clerk told him there was a Denny’s near by.

With that, we went to Denny’s.

While we were there, another person who rode up with us called his wife to say they were staying at the exact same hotel, and were eating at the exact same Denny’s, and in the exact same booth as the last time he went to this event.

LTG- Wow, Deja Vu. Or would that be synergy? Irony? Anyway, how about the main event for Saturday; I suppose the first question should be how does this whole Team Format work? Let’s start with the rounds, how are they run in this format?

CL- Each team player is assigned a letter, A, B or C. You then face the opponent from another team that mirrors your letter, and you play that opponent best 2 out of 3. The winning team is given a “Win” rather than 2-0, a 2-1 or what have you. All in all I think day 1 was around 9 rounds. those who went X-2 or better moved on to the next day.

LTG- How did deck construction go with the limited resources you had? Not quite sealed deck with 6 boosters each, not quite draft with 3 boosters each, but 12 boosters to be divided as you all see fit. Do you think it went well?

CL- We thought we had put together some pretty good decks. Chris L. built a Jeskai Midrange that was a pretty good Tempo deck as well. Geoffrey put together a Sultai Control deck, and I made a Red Green splash Blue agro deck.

LTG- Alright, off to round 1. Tell us about it.

CL- Our first team we faced was a really friendly group of guys…who crushed us. My multicolored agro deck faced a mono red agro deck. This is when I found out just how good “Dash” is.

LTG-Well, I suppose it was still early in the day. It’s not like you’re gonna be facing any big name magic players or anything until later in the day, right?

CL- Well, round 2 we went up against the team of Ben Stark, Nakamura, and Reaves.

LTG-Oh…Sorry

CL- Yeah, we lost that round pretty hard, although Chris L. managed to pull out the win versus Nakamura. I thought I was doing pretty well against Stark, but when I thought I was one turn away from victory, all I needed him to do was anything but the one thing he did. He looked at my face down morph card, said you have an Awaken the Ancients, and played accordingly.

LTG- What was he running?

CL- He was running a bunch of high toughness creatures that he would then use to clear the board with Grim Contest. Turns out that’s a pretty good strategy.

LTG- Off to round 3 then?

CL- Yup. We were already down 2, and couldn’t afford another defeat, so we spent a good amount of time going, YEAH WE CAN DO THIS! WOO HOO! GO TEAM! and so forth. We actually ended up winning that round.

LTG- That means round 4 was next. How’d that go?

CL- Round 4 we faced 3 12 year olds…maybe younger. 1 of them had been playing for like 4 months. They were so sporadic, to put it nicely. They were opening packs during game play, so Chris had them deck checked. We even considered asking a judge to do the shuffling for them because they were holding the cards in a way that they could see them as they shuffled. Still, when it was all said and done, they beat us. At that point, since we had no chance of going on to day 2, we decided to drop from the main tournament and go to the side events. We did a Sealed event, then a Standard.

LTG- Bummer man. How’d those events turn out?

CL- In the Sealed Event I went 2-1-1. Every round I played in went to turns, and that was because of me. The tournament officials gave everyone 5 packs for their patience.

LTG- Sweet! Nothing like a plus to end a day. So day 3 then. How‘d that go?

CL- We ended up doing another Team Sealed. We missed out on the Sunday Super Series because it turns out we were suppose to sign up the day before. We opened up some good cards. Chris ended up doing Jeskai Control, Geoffrey ran BW Warriors. I was so impressed with Ben Stark’s deck from yesterday, I made an Abzan one.

LTG- How’d that turn out?

CL- We went 2-2-1.

LTG- Anything of interest happen in that event?

CL- We were pretty confident in our decks. We thought we would all play aggressively. If anyone offered us a draw, we figured we’d decline. It happened, we declined. Ended up losing that round.

LTG- Oh well, that’s experience for you. So there you all were, a grip of cards you all bought into, and now you need to divvy them up. How did you all end up splitting your cards in the end?

CL- We decided to keep 3 cards out of the Team Sealed pulls and sold the rest to the vendors there. We ended up making enough to at least pay for the tournaments that way.

LTG- There it is. A full 3 day weekend of MtG. Fun, friends, frivolity, and whatnot. In the end it’s all about the experience, good or bad. What was your take away from all this?

CL- The format is fun, but random. You can be a good player and have a good deck, but you can still lose because it’s a team situation. Deck building can be a challenge. You need to approach this as a group, not as individuals. Otherwise, you’ll end up with cards in your sideboard that would have been better in someone else’s. Other than that, if given the chance, I’d do it again.

LTG- Great information my good sir. Thanks for your time.

CL- You’re welcome

This was a team tournament, each team consisting of 3 members. Chris L., Corbin L., and Geoffrey M. represented our humble little group.

Tonight, we'll be asking them about their experience; the good, the bad and the ugly. We'll pick their brain about their overall opinions, as well as see what kind of gems we can mine out of them to make our future endeavors better.

1. Ken’s Discussion point-

Last week, Corbin talked in part about what he referred to as Triangles in Magic. The first of the two focused on what is considered the Archetypes, that is what is considered to be the basis for which most decks are built around.

I found an article that helps break it down another way:

“Aggro, Combo, and Control, as generally described here, form the rock, paper, and scissors of Magic: The Gathering. Aggro tends to beat control because it develops an advantage before control can play its signature cards. Control tends to beat combo because it can disrupt the most important pieces of the card combo, leaving the combo player with weak cards. Combo tends to beat aggro because the combo player can finish his combo, killing the aggro player, while the aggro player is still fighting towards victory. Because of this tendency, elements of aggro, combo, and control are used by wise players in order to build the most effective possible deck.” - MTG Salvation

The discussion of Tempo, card advantage, and Philosophy of Fire are about the theory of winning strategies in Magic. There are other deck ideas, of course, but these are a good place to start.

Tempo, or Timing, is about getting board advantage before your opponent. Card Advantage, probably the first theory postulated in the early days of Magic, is about having more cards, therefore options, than your opponent. The philosophy of fire is the newest of these three ideologies. It is easiest to describe as burn, but it actually goes a bit deeper. Another way to put it is, how much of your opponents life are you trading for your cards?

C. last week’s action item

1. Ryan, agro control-midrange

i. easiest to play

ii. overwhelms

iii. your answeres give advantage to play on your turn as well as your opponents

2. Ken’s play style

I’ve always been a blue player. Beating on someone with creatures just seems a bit too straight forward, just like hitting them with burn spells. I’d rather mess with the other players plans, slowly but surely taking over control of the game turn by turn. As far as the deck archetype, I would consider myself Control/Combo (paper/scissors)

2. hornet queen

3. treasure cruise

4. decks are going heavy with mana

5. some cards just have giant targets on their foreheads
